A
bat mitzvah celebration was held at Bris Avrohom of Old Bridge on Sunday, May 27. Five girls who attended the
Chaya Esther Hebrew School program at Bris Avrohom for several years participated in this commencement celebration
with their close family and friends in attendance. Previously, each young lady was formally given her Hebrew name in
a naming ceremony held during the Torah reading of Shabbat morning services.
The girls, Rafaela Maller, Rochelle Fleisher, Erica Finkelstein, Rachel Kabotyansky, and Deborah Bakshiyev,
spent the last year in Hebrew School focusing their learning on the specific role of women in Judaism. They completed
in-depth reports based on months of learning and research.
At the program, each girl spoke about what she had learned and thanked her parents and Bris Avrohom for their years
of dedicated guidance. Awards were handed out and each bat mitzvah girl received a silver candlestick.
The program included a lavish luncheon, speeches by Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky, executive director of Bris Avrohom;
Rabbi Yossi Kanelsky, regional director; and a poignant talk by one girl's mother who felt that she, herself,
had become a bat mitzvah that day as well. It was a meaningful and beautiful event.
