Libby Barsky THE JEWISH STATE April 10, 2009
Name: Betty Golub Occupation: Education director for Temple Beth Israel Religious School Address: Bedminster Family: Married 40 years to Lester Golub, a salesman in retail floor coverings for East Windsor Floors in Merchantsville. Children: Daughter Karen is a school librarian at Miller School in Newark, and is married to Andrew Krieger, owner of Cheeburger Cheeburger in Cherry Hill. They have three children: Steven, 14, Rachel, 8, and Dylan, 3, and live in Allentown. Son Erik lives in South Orange in a program for adult disabled. Older sister Jeri is married to Peter Ginsberg. They live with their four children in Plantation, Fla. Younger sister Linda Jaffrey lives in Matawan with her 2 children. Community activities: President of the local Jewish Educators Assembly the education part of United Synagogue. Hobbies: Knitting and cooking. "I love to cook, and I cook from scratch. I've been knitting baby blankets for the friends of my daughter who are now pregnant. They are all getting baby blankets from me." Self-portrait: "I'm very conservative and very quiet, especially when I am home but no one believes me. I want to impart a love of Judaism to the students in the school. I'm concerned about imparting love of Judaism to children." Motto: "It could be worse." "I can't tell you how many times a day I say that." Greatest Accomplishment: "My family. I'm very proud of my son, Erik, and daughter, Karen. Karen is a librarian in Newark and tries to get parents involved. Erik does weight lifting and at Special Olympics events he's won a lot of gold medals. Another accomplishment is my career. I have been in Hebrew education for 25 years, not always as an administrator. I love being an administrator, especially at this congregation." Bad habits: "I can't say 'no'. I once took an assertive training class and it really didn't work. They told me to practice saying 'no' to a mirror. It doesn't work." Favorite TV programs: "ER" and the different "CSI" series. Favorite food: "Chicken -- any kind of chicken." Best childhood memory: "Spending the summers with my aunt and uncle in Memphis, Tenn., and when they moved to Jonesboro, Ark. in the summer. I grew up in Matawan. My parents didn't have a car until 1955 and our first trip to Memphis was in 1956. We drove without air conditioning in the car. No one had air conditioning in those days. We spent two or three weeks with our cousins. It was very hot. It was there that my uncle took me out and bought me my first Dr. Pepper soda, because at home we weren't allowed to drink soda." People don't know that... "I was an extremely quiet child and that I almost failed public speaking at Monmouth College because I was afraid to open my mouth." Last book I read: "The Friday Night Knitting Club," by Kate Jacobs. "It was about the customers of a knitting store who, through telling their life stories while knitting, they forged a sisterhood." Biggest asset in the local Jewish Community: "The commitment of the community here both to the synagogue (Congregation Beth Israel) and to the Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey. They have wonderful partnership with federation. Recently federation brought in Dr. Wendy Mogul, author of 'Blessings on a Wounded Knee,' as a speaker and Congregation Beth Israel hosted the event -- 300 people came to hear her. Dr. Mogul also did an in-service for teachers of Hebrew schools, day school and early childhood centers." Biggest problem in the local Jewish community: "The financial situation now. It's having a tremendous impact on the programs and services within the community." If I had more time... "I would like to deliver Kosher Meals on Wheels and go into the schools to read to the children." |
