BENDAVID.Mr. Joseph J. Bendavid of Princeton died Aug. 12, 2009. He was 79. Joe was an incredibly warm and loving person, who was beloved by all. Whether you knew Joe your entire life or for just a few minutes, Joe made sure to know as much about you as possible. He valued everyone and considered no one a stranger. Joe spent his professional career working at Triangle Industries but his true passion lied with the theater. A patron and contributor of the arts, Joe began acting in high school and continued on during his days in the Army entertaining his fellow troops. Theater was so integral to his life that it was during a "Plays in the Park" production of "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" where Joe met his wife, Jane, on stage. Deeply committed to his Sephardic heritage, Joe and his family were members of Congregation Etz Ahaim for years, the synagogue of which his father, Jack Bendavid, was a founding member. Joe is survived by his wife, Jane (nee Tamm); daughter, Rachel; son, Jake; brother, Daniel; grandchildren, Elijah, Gabriella and Lilianna; and an extensive extended family. By supporting the Taglit-Birthright, you will send thousands of high school and college students in his honor. BLAHER.Mrs. Miriam Blaher died Aug. 16, 2009, at home. She was 81. Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Blaher was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Sophie Greenberg Rappaport and lived in the Flemington area since 1946. A graduate of the City College of New York, she worked at first in her father's delicatessen, then went on to become a vital part of Reimer Construction Company. Additionally, she was formerly part-owner of the Flemington Roller Rink and also a physician's assistant with the office of Dr. Steinberg and Dr. Grossman in Hopewell. Along with her son, Joel, she owned and operated the Flemington Coffee Shop for many years and she also assisted her husband, William, at Blaher's Stationery Store. A member of the Flemington Jewish Community Center, she had been secretary of its Sisterhood. Mrs. Blaher is survived by her husband of 36 years, William S.; sons, Jerry Reimer of Milltown, Cary Reimer of Lambertville, and Joel Reimer of Raritan; brother, Albert Rappaport of Highland Park; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. ELFANT.Mrs. Anne Kerr Elfant died Aug. 10, 2009, at home. She was 97. Born in Somerville, Anne lived many years in New Brunswick before retiring to Florida with her husband Morris in 1971. She moved back to New Jersey years later. She volunteered through the 1950s at the Menlo Park Veterans Hospital in Edison, where she worked with the Jewish War Veterans Organization. In later years, she worked with her husband Morris in the family business of B. Elfant & Sons in New Brunswick. Not only was she the first founding member of the Poile Zedek Cemetery Association, she was the first president, serving for nearly 45 years. Although she moved to Florida in 1971, she continued as president until 1991 often coming back from Florida to handle association business. She was very active in the Sisterhood of Congregation Poile Zedek in New Brunswick, and also served as president. The Elfant family was not only founding and active members of the Poile Zedek congregation, but the congregation was founded at the Elfant residence first on 21-23 Hiram St. and then at 18 Codwise Ave. (Joyce Kilmer Ave.) and met there for many years until the present building was erected on Neilson Street. The chairman of the building committee was Benjamin Elfant and his son, Morris, and Morris's son, Mark, were past presidents of the congregation. Her husband, Morris, died in 1982; her daughter, Marcia Bronfman, died in 1985. Anne is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Wendy of Rutherford; daughter and son-in-law, Zesel and Bruce Chashin of Boca Raton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. FINKELSTEIN.Mr. David Finkelstein died Aug. 15, 2009, at Hamilton Park Health Care Center in Jersey City. He was 79. David was born in Romania to Menasha and Leah Finkelstein, and the family moved and lived in Israel for several years, where he was educated. They immigrated to the U.S. when he was a teenager and lived in New York for a short time before moving to Bayonne where he lived until his death. He was first employed as a clothing salesman, then owned a confectionary business, then worked as a chef for L&K Restaurant and Catering in Bayonne. Thereafter he worked for about 20 years as a chef in the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center in Jersey City until his retirement five years ago. He fluently spoke six languages and volunteered as an interpreter for many organizations. He was an active member of Temple Emanu-El of Bayonne, Congregation Ohav Zedek, and several other religious and civic organizations, and was a benefactor to countless charitable organizations. His loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Eleanor (Kotzen), died in 1991. Mr. Finkelstein is survived by several relatives in Israel as well as many friends in Bayonne and New York. Mrs. Betty Hess Gilbert died Aug. 13, 2009, at King Manor Care Center, Neptune. She was 101. Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Gilbert lived in Asbury Park and Deal for most of her life. She was a passionate teacher who cared for students in so many ways. She was a member of Temple Beth El of Asbury Park and Oakhurst for many years. She was also active in many Jewish organizations in the shore area. Her husband, Joseph, died in 1985. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Miles and Leslie of Framingham, Mass.; grandsons, Joshua and Jason; and nieces and nephews. She was particularly proud to be a sister and sister-in-law. Interment at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Neptune. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. GOLDBERG. Mrs. Louise Ann (nee Harrison) Goldberg, died Aug. 15, 2009, at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 66. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Louise was an active, gorgeous, vibrant woman who was very much loved by her family and friends. A graduate of F.I.T. in New York City, Louise worked in the fashion district before raising her children. During her lifetime, Louise was an active member of National Council of Jewish Women and was a successful realtor with Weichert Realtors. Over the years, Louise and her husband, Arthur, were able to travel the world and enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchild. Louise is survived by her husband, Arthur, whom she married on Feb. 26, 1967; son Gregg; daughter, Jill; grandson, Maxwell; mother, Edith Harrison of Fort Lee; sister, Jean of New York; and cousin, Ina Grossman of Morris Plains. Arrangements by Jewish Memorial Chapel, Clifton. Memorial donations be made to ovarian cancer research funds. SABRIN.Mrs. Libby P. Sabrin of died Aug. 14, 2009, at home. She was 89. Born in Tomashow Mazawiecki, Poland, Mrs. Sabrin arrived in the United States on Aug. 6, 1949. She was the only member of her family to survive the Holocaust. She was a partisan in Vilna during World War II, and her late husband, Abraham, was a partisan commander. She was adored by family, friends, and neighbors for her humor, compassion, wisdom, and generosity. She touched the hearts and lives of many people, especially the 32 children for whom she cared over the last three decades. Mrs. Sabrin is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Sandy, Murray and Florence, and Max and Nadine; grandchildren, Ben and Marcie; and great-grandson, Alexy. Mrs. Marilyn Mintz Warschaw Sinuk died Aug. 11, 2009, at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. She was 85. Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Sinuk lived there until moving to Monroe 18 years ago. She was a member of the Jewish Congregation of Clearbook and the Ladies Club of Post 395 Jewish War Veterans, both of Monroe. She was predeceased by her first husband, Sidney Warschaw. Mrs. Sinuk is survived by her husband of 14 years, Seymour; nephew and niece-in-law, Fred and Ellen Naddelman of Dayton; and niece and nephew-in-law, Linda and Ted Schechter of Suffern, N.Y. Mr. Jack Murray Slater died Aug. 12, 2009. He was 82. Born in New York City, Jack was the son of the late Joseph and Gertrude Slater. In 1945, he graduated with honors from Valley Forge Military Academy as a major. In June 1948, he graduated from The Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania and was an active member of Tau Epsilon Phi. He began his business career at Bamberger's Department Store as a safety director and in 1952 joined Triangle Conduit and Cable Company in New Brunswick. For 25 years, Jack was their chief financial officer. In 1977 he joined Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor and became a partner with his son, Mitchell, until he retired in 2001. He earned the trust and respect of clients and colleagues. In August of 1946, Jack met the love of his life, Beatrice Ginsberg of Philadelphia, at The Colony Surf Club in West End, and they married June 16, 1948. Married for 61 years, Jack became a founding member of Temple Sha'arey Shalom in Springfield in 1957. Jack loved life. He lived in Springfield for 56 years and was a manager of Springfield's Little League baseball and loved to watch the Mets with Bea. For many years he was an avid golfer at Twin Brooks in Watchung and was the remaining survivor of a regular foursome. For 33 years, one of his great joys in retirement was to organize a family photographic collage highlighting the year's family events. These memories in light were a celebration of the importance of family in his life. He was predeceased by his parents-in-law, George and Fannie Ginsberg; sister-in-law, Annette Lawrence; and brother-in-law, Judd Winick. Mr. Slater is survived by his beloved wife, Beatrice; children, Diane and Jerry Bedrin of Franklin Lakes, Jeffrey Slater and Ra El Remez of Raleigh, N.C., and Mitchell Slater and Leslie Dickstein of Westfield; sister, Roslyn Winick of Maplewood; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Elinor, of Israel; grandchildren, Jaime Bedrin and Scott Dodd, Garret and Jessica Bedrin, Sarah Slater, Fanny Slater, Harrison Slater and Georgia Slater; great-grandson, Henry Asher Dodd; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Born in the Bronx, Sol lived in Englishtown and came to Lakewood in the 1940s. He attended Lakewood High School and graduated from Temple University School of Pharmacy. He was a pharmacist for the Sav-on-Drugs in Yardville. He was a past member of Congregation Ahavat Shalom, Lakewood. His beloved wife of 54 years, Geri, died in 2007. Mr. Teitelbaum is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Stephanie of East Windsor; daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Alan Schoenfeld of Manalapan, and Karen and Mark Purisch of N. Potomac, Md.; sister, Ruth Abramson of Florida; eight grandchildren; and his dear companion, Mitzi Krampf. Interment at Mt. Sinai Cemetery, Lakewood.
