Temple Emanu-El. 5 p.m. Menorah Lighting at Woodbridge Town Hall, 1 Main St. Woodbridge.

Chabad. Third night of Chanukah Menorah lighting in Warren. For the 4th consecutive year, a large 9-foot menorah will stand proudly below the large flag in flag plaza, 61 Mountain Ave., Warren to share the Chanukah message with passersby. At 6 p.m. a special celebration will take place with community representatives and leaders participating. Piping hot latkas and traditional Chanukah gelt will be shared. The whole community is welcome.

Highland Park Conservative Temple – Congregation Anshe Emeth will revisit a film classic as it screens The Pawnbroker at 8 p.m. The film, which is rated R for adult content and brief nudity, runs 116 minutes and will be shown at the synagogue, 201 South Third Avenue in Highland Park. In the film, Rod Steiger gives an Oscar-nominated performance as the embittered survivor of a Nazi death camp who cannot escape the ghosts of his past. A talk and audience discussion, led Rabbi James S. Diamond, will immediately follow the screening. This film screening and talk are open to the public with a $5 donation suggested, but not required. Additional screenings in the series include James' Journey to Jerusalem on Jan. 5, Only Human Feb. 2, Close to Home on March 1 and Strange Fruit on April 5.

Hadassah Young Women of Raritan Valley is having a Chanukah Party 7 p.m. in Highland Park. This event features food, fun and friends. Learn about "Being Your Own Maccabee." The Union County Torah Center and the Chai Center of Millburn/Short Hills are cosponsoring a "Chanukah on Ice" event at the Union Sports Arena in Union, Route 22W, next to Best Buy, from 6:30-8 p.m. Participants will skate to Jewish music, while watching a spectacular Ice Menorah being lit in the center of the rink. From 7–8:30 p.m. families from the area can meet Princeton Sport Center formerly PRO SKATE USA Ice Arena for the ultimate celebration of Chanukah – "Chanukah On Ice," a unique event with non-stop action and activities for all ages sponsored by Chabad of South Brunswick. The program will begin with the traditional Havdallah Ceremony and continue with open skating where children and adults can ice skate to contemporary Jewish music and classic Chanukah songs. There will be kosher food, including hot latkes, doughnuts and other refreshments. During the skating, a professional ice sculptor will carve a giant menorah out of a huge block of ice. Once completed it is actually lit during the festivities. A new addition for this year will be having a huge Lucite dreidel filled with dreidels where participants can guess how many dreidels are in the huge dreidel. The winner will receive a prize. Chabad of Union County will celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, at its annual public menorah lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. at the Fanwood train station on North Avenue, off of Martine Avenue. In the Jewish tradition, Bikkur cholim, "visiting the sick," is a mitzvah, or good deed; it is an opportunity to express both responsibility and loving-kindness. Visiting someone who is ill or isolated brings comfort, reinforces connections to life, and supports and strengthens our community. Rabbi Arnie Gluck, spiritual leader of Temple Beth-El, will give a teaching and engage us in a discussion to broaden our perspective and explore how we can enhance our lives by reaching out to others.

The Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth. The Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth has several USY programs planned that are open to all Jewish students of high school age. The events are also open to non-USYers on a trial basis, but membership is eventually needed to participate year round. The Union County Torah Center and Tzivos Hashem will air "Professor Pellah’s Place" a Chanukah 7:30 pm. on Comcast Cable Channel 26. The half-hour CABLE TV program is for Jewish and to non-Jewish children interested in getting a bit of Jewish culture, customs and ideas including the arts of candle making and oil pressing, and public menorah lightings in cities such as Moscow, London, Jerusalem, New York and Paris, and an animated history of Chanukah as seen by a young boy in ancient times. Congregation Beth Israel, 18 Shalom Way, Scotch Plains. Author and educator Dale Baumwoll to lead program at the JCC on "Safely Navigating the Middle School Years." The issues that middle school students confront on a daily basis pose unique challenges for both the children and their parents, whether it’s making new friends and how to behave with the old friends left behind, dealing with the "mean kids" who don’t know how to handle being popular, or how parents can help their kids in a way that doesn’t drive the kids crazy, it can be difficult to navigate the middle school years. To help families meet those challenges, the JCC of Central NJ and Congregation Beth Israel are co-sponsoring a program at 7 p.m. featuring author and educator Baumwoll, author of There’s No Room for You, Maddie Morrison, a tween novel that directly addresses the above issues and more, who will facilitate discussions on creating positive relationships between parents and their children and children with their peers. Both a parent and a sixth-grade teacher; she was named 2007 U.S. History Teacher of the Year for New Jersey by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History’s Preserve America Program. All are welcome to attend this program, and parents are encouraged to bring their middle schooled-aged children with them. The cost is $10 per family for JCC and CBI members, and $12 per family for the community at large. Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, 222 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, (732) 545-6484, http://aemt.net. The Music of Naomi Shemer (1930-2004). Shemer was one of Israel’s most important and prolific songwriters, considered by many to be "The First Lady of Israeli Song." Her virtuosic use of the Hebrew language and her stirring melodies combined to create some of Israel ’s most readily identified anthems, such as Yerushalayim Shel Zahav and Al Kol Eilaeh. Cantor Ott will be joined by Makhelat Anshe Emet and Shirei Emet in this musical tribute to one of Israel ’s great musical figures.

Temple Beth El of Somerset’s Men’s Club Men’s Club at 9:30 a.m. Dani Klein, North American Campus Director for Stand With Us will be presenting at the Men’s Club Breakfast meeting. He will be discussing the activities of Stand With Us. All are invited. Stand With Us was founded in 2001 in response to the second Intifada and the misinformation that surrounds the conflict. It is an advocacy organization that promotes education and understanding that will bring a secure future for Israel and her neighbors. It educates through fact-based materials, weekly alerts, speakers, programs and conferences.

The panel of featured authors who will be speaking at this event will include: Lucette Lagnado, author of The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit: My Family’s Exodus from Old Cairo to the New World, favorably reviewed by The New York Times; Victoria Redel, author of The Border of Truth: A Novel. The Border of Truth is a novel based on the real-life experience of Victoria Redel’s father who escaped from Europe alone as a teenager, in 1940; Dalia Sofer, author of the Septembers of Shiraz; Mort Zachter, author of Dough, A Memoir. Zachter lives in Princeton and Dough is not only a family memoir, but also the story of how the Jewish Lower East Side shaped his family.
