Funeral services will be conducted from the Menorah Chapels at Millburn, 2950 Vaux Hall Road, Union, on Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at 10 a.m. Interment is at Bnai Abraham Memorial Park, Union. He was the devoted son of Max and Rebecca Teitelbaum, predeceased, brother of Norman Teitelbaum, predeceased, and Shirley Cohen, and uncle and cousin of many adoring family members. Dr. Teitelbaum lived an incredibly full and rich life. To many, he was the family dentist, a dedicated professional whose knowledge, skills and caring, and wonderful sense of humor, kept patients coming from even long distances for not just a cleaning and a filling but for the feeling that at least their mouths were in the best of hands. Can anyone really say that going to the dentist is a pleasurable experience? For many of Dr. Teitelbaums patients, it truly was. But Dr. Teitelbaum was so much more than a dentist. He was a playwright and lyricist whose work was staged not only as community events at local elementary schools and synagogues (Young Israel in Newark and Suburban Torah in Livingston), but also as lavish Off-Broadway productions, such as Hooray! Its a Glorious Day...and All That, which was directed by the actor and talk show host, Charles Grodin, in 1966. He also served as a captain in the United States Army, stationed in Germany during the early 1950s. He served on the board of trustees for the Newark Public Library, including as its president; chaired the states first Israeli Exhibition and Trade Fair at the old Newark YM-YWHA; co-authored the book, Mangled Medicine, in 1972, and throughout several decades wrote hundreds of wideranging articles for dental magazines. In addition, he was not only a skilled finisher of crossword puzzles (and cryptograms), but also an author of them, including several that were published in the daily edition and the Sunday Magazine section of the New York Times. He was also an award-winning photographer who on occasion showed his work at local photography stores; an avid stamp collector, an accomplished chess player, and a violinist. More than his accomplishments, what was most remarkable about Dr. Teitelbaum was his intelligence and his character. He was brilliant about many different areas of study, able and eager to engage in conversation about virtually any topic (the arts, politics, science, philosophy, medicine, current events, etc.) with anyone who sought to do so. He was an exceedingly good-natured and generous man, whose passion, humor, humanity and love shone brightly throughout his entire life. DEATH NOTICES Published in the Star-Ledger on 11/21/2007.
