THE JEWISH STATEDecember 11, 2009 EPSTEIN. Mr. Henry I. Epstein died Dec. 4, 2009. He was 88. Born in Long Branch, Mr. Epstein grew up in Asbury Park and was a resident of Ocean since 1955. He graduated from Asbury Park High School, where he earned his varsity letter in football, and New York University School of Commerce, where he met his future wife, Geraldine, and was editor-in-chief of the Commerce Journal. During World War II, he served in the Army in the Pacific theater as a member of General MacArthur's staff. He was a certified public accountant and a retired business executive, having owned and operated National Produce Company, Inc., of Neptune, with his brother William, for more than 50 years. He was a founding member of Temple Beth Torah, of Ocean Township, and was a lifetime member of B'nai B'rith. He was a Boy Scout leader and also served as chair of the fundraising committee for the March of Dimes. He was honored to be a member of the Masons for almost 40 years and he received his Master Mason Degree in 1972. He was a Past Master of the Asbury Jordan Lodge for three years and a Past Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey. As a proud veteran, he served as the New Jersey State Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America and was a member of Post #125, Asbury Park/Ocean. He was also an active member of the American Legion Post #346, Neptune, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1333, Asbury Park. Mr. Epstein is survived by his daughters, Renee Kemmeries of Ocean and Susan Kent of Cohasset, Mass.; nieces and nephews, Shirley and Barry Kaplan of Freehold, Linda Sinins of Springfield, Jill Lenese of Stroudsburg, Pa., and Dr. Leonard Epstein and Susan Epstein of Buffalo, N.Y.; grand-nieces and nephews, Rachel and Graig Parente of New Providence, Bruce Kaplan of Cambridge, Mass., Lee Sinins of Springfield, Joshua and Stephanie Sinins of Fairfax, Va., Robert Sinins of Mashpee, Mass., and Aliza and Haley Epstein of Buffalo, N.Y.; great-grand niece and nephews, Jacob, Tyler and Annabelle Sinins of Mashpee, Mass.; and many friends who will miss him. Born in Liberty, N.Y., Barney subsequently lived in New Brunswick then moved to Lakewood with his eight brothers and parents in 1929, where he lived the remainder of his life. He ran Gertners Bakery, Lakewood, with his brothers for 37 years. He spearheaded many enterprises for the Gertner family, including the construction of Lakewood Gardens Apartments. Earlier in life he had been the bandleader of the Lakewood Vikings which played in many shore areas. He was a three-letter man at Lakewood High School, graduating in 1933. He was also a realtor and building contractor. In 2000 he moved to Harrogate with his brother Oscar where he added many new friends to those he had already developed during his 80 years in Lakewood. His wife, Charlotte, died in 1983. Mr. Gertner is survived by his brother, Norman of Lakewood; many nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law; his adopted Thai family; and many other close friends and relatives. Interment at Mt. Mrs. Evelyn (née Better) Isaacson died Dec. 3, 2009 at the Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison. She was 65. Born in Queens, Mrs. Isaacson lived in Englewood before moving to Kendall Park in 1972. She received her B.A. degree in education from Queens College and had taught in Harlem, N.Y., Englewood, and the East Windsor Regional School District. She retired in 2004 from the Walter C. Black Elementary School, East Windsor, where she had taught for the last 10 years of her career. She was a member of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, New Brunswick; a volunteer at the Medical Center at Princeton; a member of Brandeis Women, and had been a participant in the Rutgers University Adult Learning Program. She was predeceased by her parents, Edmund and Resi (née Freund) Better. Mrs. Isaacson is survived by her daughter, Debra Isaacson of Cambridge, Mass.; mother-in-law, Betty Isaacson; brother-in-law, Allen Gelb; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Karl and Anita Jacobs; and nieces and nephews, Lisa and Bruce Gelb, and Dana and Alan Safrin. Miller died Nov. 30, 2009 at home. She was 85. Born in Englishtown, Mrs. Miller was an office manager for Miller's Dry Cleaners, Miller's Stag Shoppe, and Miller's Uniform Company, all of Freehold. She was a member of Congregation Agudath Achim, Freehold, where she was a past president of the Sisterhood of the congregation; a member of Hadassah; a past president of Freehold Area Hospital Auxiliary; an officer in the Riderwood Jewish Community, Silver Spring, Md.; and social chairperson of the Buttonwood Community, West Palm Beach, Florida. Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Charles R.; daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Irwin Goldberg and Debbie and Rory Schick; and grandchildren, Scott, Lisa, Matthew, and Jordan. Memorial donations may be given to the Brem Breast Cancer Foundation, PO Box 1891, Prince Frederick, Md. 20678. STRAUS. Mrs. Evelyn Sherman Straus, of Tinton Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009. Born in Newark, Mrs. Straus lived in Long Branch before moving to Middletown and then Tinton Falls. She was the second sibling in a family of three boys and two girls. She graduated from Long Branch High School in 1937 and from Brookdale Community College in 1985. She was a procurement analyst at Fort Monmouth and retired in 1983, being employed there from 1940 to 1951, and from 1963 until her retirement. While employed, she received awards for her many suggestions that were adopted and resulted in savings for the government. She was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel of Rumson. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Morris D.; her European-born parents, Sam Scheierman of Rumania and Lillian of Austria; a younger brother, Norman; and an elder brother, Harold. Mrs. Straus is survived by her sister, Beatrice Huber of Tinton Falls; brother, Bernard Scheierman of Toms River; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Katie of San Diego, Alan and Maria of Long Branch, and Lawrence of Ewing; and grandchildren, Jenna, Erica, Nicholas, Emily, and Evan. Interment at Congregation B'nai Israel Cemetery, Tinton Falls. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. WIENER. Mr. Joseph Wiener died Nov. 30, 2009 at home. He was 78. Born in the Bronx, Joe lived in Staten Island before moving to Marlboro in 1984. He was the founder of Joe Wiener's Clothesline, Inc., of Freehold. Its modest beginnings in his Staten Island home basement rapidly grew into a regional business based in Freehold, with branches in the Midwest and Florida. His unique business model earned him respect and admiration from colleagues in the garment and long-term care industries. Prior to The Clothesline, Joe owned Wiener's Place, a confectionary/luncheonette in two Staten Island locations. He was a longtime member of Congregation B'nai Jeshrun on Staten Island serving on the board and being instrumental in selecting the site of the present synagogue location. He was also an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Castleton Lodge Pythian Association. As a New Jersey resident, he was a member of Temple Shaari Emeth in Manalapan and the Jewish War Veterans of Marlboro. He served in the Korean War as the personal aide to the Provost Marshal. Mr. Wiener is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Audrey; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Marcie of Springfield, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Larry Lindenbaum of Marlboro; and his grandsons, Aaron and Jeffrey Wiener, and Steven and Robert Lindenbaum.
