December 19, 2008 BARRETT. Mr. Ronald David Barrett, Esq., died Nov. 11, 2008 at home. He was 77. Born in Chicago, Mr. Barrett moved to Gary, Ind., as a young boy and graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1949. In 1953 he graduated from Indiana University, where he was a member of the Sphinx Club, an honorary fraternity, and a member and president of Pi Lambda Phi, where he and his wife, Lois, met. He served as an army private 1953-55, including in Fontainebleau, France, where he was the only member of the 7779 Budget and Fiscal Corp. responsible for setting up new accounting systems throughout Europe. In 1958, he graduated from Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle, Pa., where he was an editor of the Law Review. He was admitted to the New Jersey Bar, the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, and the U.S. Court of Appeals Third Circuit. He practiced law in Monmouth County since 1959. He served two terms as the commander of Monmouth Post 125 JWV. He was on the board of the JCC of Deal Park, was a past president of Temple Beth El Men's Club, served as attorney for Township of Ocean Senior Housing, and served many years as the attorney for the Eatontown Senior Citizens' Housing Board. He was a member of the Ocean Township Lions' Club, the Asbury Park Jaycees, and was the last president of the Asbury Park YMCA. He was predeceased by his parents, Pearl and Barney, and by his sister, her husband and their son, Marcia, Ralph and Bobby King Baker. Mr. Barrett is survived by his wife, Lois (Barr) of Asbury Park; daughters, Patti and her fiancé, Doug Miller, of Tallahassee, Fla., Laurie Dalton and her husband, Dave, of Long Branch, and Beth Barrett and her partner, Debbie Cavalier, of Watertown, Mass.; grandchildren, Morgan, Gabrielle, Kyle and Jami; brother, Alan Barrett, of Kenosha, Wis.; and sisters, Brenda Strimling, and Dr. Ramsey Pevsner of Hollywood Beach, Fla. Mr. Barry Lionel Bernard died Dec. 13, 2008, at Centra State Medical Center, Freehold. He was 75. Born in Brooklyn, Barry grew up in Elizabeth and later returned to Brooklyn. He settled in Edison before moving to Jackson seven years ago. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Temple Beth Am Shalom, Lakewood, and participated in many of the social activities in his Westlake community. Barry is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Judith (née Eilbaum); sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jacqueline of Cherry Hill, and Mark of Raritan; daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Michael Kass of Edison; sister, Doris Schleifer of Monsey, N.Y.; and grandsons, Ian, Perry, Adam and Aaron. He was 96. Born in New York City, Mr. Braun lived in Franklin before moving to South Brunswick 50 years ago. Before retiring in 1978, he was an engineer for Lockheed Electronics, Plainfield, for 30 years. His son, Douglas, died in 1998. Mr. Braun is survived by his wife of 59 years, Juliet; sons and daughter-in-law, Gil Braun of Plainsboro and Edward Braun and Anne-Adele Wight of Philadelphia; and nephews, Philip and Neil Isaacs. EVAN. Mr. Rafael I. Evan, Ph.D., 81, of Little Silver died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma on Nov. 9, 2008 at Riverview Medical Center. He was 81. Born in Przemysl, Poland, Dr. Evan and his family immigrated to British Mandate Palestine in 1933. He served in the Jewish Brigade, a military formation of the British Army prior to the founding of the state of Israel. He also fought in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence as a member of the Israeli Defense Forces. After the establishment of the State of Israel, he immigrated to the United States. He received his M.A. in 1955 at the New School for Social Research in New York City and his Ph.D. at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany, in 1967. He was a clinical psychologist, practicing in Monmouth County for more than 50 years. He was the former chief psychologist of Riverview Medical Center, and helped to establish the mental health clinics at Monmouth Medical Center and Riverview Hospital in the late 60s and early 70s. He was very dedicated to his clients. Dr. Evan is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Carolyn of West Newton, Mass.; daughter Orna; brother, Uri of New York City; ex-wife, Irene Hengel of Brick; and his companion, Marianna Hatch of Little Silver. Milbauer Gelfand died Dec. 7, 2008 at home. She was 84. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Gelfand lived in Philadelphia for 10 years and then Albany for 25 years before moving to Monroe nine and a half years ago. She was a former member of Hadassah and had been a current member of Women's American Organization for Rehabilitation through Training. Mrs. Gelfand is survived by her husband of 62 years, Prof. Jack E.; sons and daughter-in-law, Steven of the Bronx and Michael Gelfand and Nancy McGahan of Purling, N.Y.; brother, Eugene Milbauer of Florida; and grandchildren, Anna, Sarah, Mary and Amy Gelfand, and James McGahan. He was 75. Born in Staten Island, Mr. Goldwyn lived there until 1986. He served during the Korean War. He owned Goldwyn Jewelers Catalog Showroom in Staten Island and Monsey, N.Y. He was the founder and board member of Gateway State Bank and former member of Port Richmond Board of Trade. He was a professional jeweler photographer and a day trader. He was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel's committee and a former member of Temple Emmanuel of Staten Island. He was pre-deceased by his parents Reba and Ben Goldwyn, and his brother Gerald Goldwyn. Mr. Goldwyn is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth; daughters and sons-in-law, Shelly and David Adelman, Shari and Rob Elliot, and Kim and Matt Guppaldi; and grandchildren, Brett, Sarah, Jessica, Jeffrey, Jordan, and Justin. Mrs. Florence Zimmerman Gordon died Dec. 11, 2008 at home. She was 80. Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Gordon lived in Sheepshead Bay, N.Y. before moving to Monroe 23 years ago. Mrs. Gordon is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Ann of Livingston and Bob and Karen of Brooklyn; brother, Samuel of Queens; sister, Natalie Weissman of Sheepshead Bay; and grandchildren, Sara, Jennifer, Michael, Matthew and Adam. Gropper died peacefully Dec. 6, 2008 at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville, with her family by her side. She was 66. Born in Plainfield, Donna was raised in Somerville and then lived in Bridgewater for 44 years before recently moving to Somerset. She worked side-by-side with her husband, Jeffrey, at Somerville Aluminum in Somerville for more than 35 years. She graduated from the Franklin School of Arts and Science in Philadelphia in 1960. She was a member of Temple Sholom of Bridgewater and the Sisterhood, and in her earlier years she was very active with the JCC in Somerville. She was a member of the Somerville High School Reunion Committee Class of 1960 and was active in fundraising for the Deborah Hospital in Browns Mills. She was an enthusiastic golfer and, with her husband and many dear friends, traveled to every corner of the world. She was an incredible cook and enjoyed hosting parties and holidays for her friends and family. During the past 15 years, she spent a great deal of time at her home in Florida, always inviting her children, grandchildren and friends to spend time with her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister and was a devoted friend to many. She was a strikingly beautiful woman both inside and out and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Her father, Edward A. Zell, died in 1985. Mrs. Gropper is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Jeffrey S.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Melissa; daughters and son-in-law, Jill and Gary Shiman, and Judy Gropper; mother, Ruth Zell; brother, Alan Zell; and grandchildren, Arielle and Ethan Shiman and Maximilian, Harrison and Ava Gropper. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Kundin moved with his family to Newark when he was 6 months old. A graduate of Newark's South Side High School, class of 1930, he attended Seth Boyden School of Business Administration, now the Rutgers Business School, and worked in the family retail business before joining the Post Office. He retired in 1977 from the main branch of the U.S. Post Office in Newark, capping a 36-year career as senior supervisor of the finance department. He served as president of the Jewish Civil Service from 1968 to 1972, and subsequently as treasurer of the Men's Club of Temple Beth Or, Brick, where he moved after his retirement. He also was a member of Club Shalom, Lakewood. Mr. Kundin is survived by his wife of 71 years, Edythe Lunde of Paterson; children, Jack Kundin of San Mateo, Calif., Susan Schept of Hoboken, and Dale Gordon of Springfield; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be sent to Temple Beth Or. LEEF. Dr. Leonard L. Leef, D.M.D. died Dec. 8, 2008 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 85. Born in Manhattan, Dr. Leef lived in Brooklyn and Staten Island before moving to Marlboro 20 years ago. Before retiring in 1985, he was self-employed with a dental practice in Brooklyn for many years. Later, he was the dental director of the International Longshoremen's Association, Brooklyn. He was an Army veteran of the Koren War. He was a member of Temple B'nai Shalom, East Brunswick; past president of Temple Israel, Staten Island; active in the Boy Scouts; and a past Scout master. He was predeceased by his brother, Seymour. Dr. Leef is survived by his wife of 58 years, Harriet Garfunkel Leef; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Karen of East Brunswick and Donald and Betty of Sharon, Mass.; daughter and son-in-law, Roxanne and Martin Hewitt of East Brunswick; grandchildren, Billy, Becky, Marcus, Philip and Jordan Leef and Samantha and Daniel Hewitt; and great-grandson, Ryan Leef. He was 87. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Lehman lived in Seaside Park. He grew up in Lakewood from age six and settled in Toms River in 1961. He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1938, where he played first base for their baseball team. He graduated from Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1942, was in the Army during World War II and served in North Africa and Italy with the Army Medical Corps. He worked at Moyer's Pharmacy, Belmar, Lakewood Pharmacy, and then opened his own pharmacy in 1951 at B&B Department Store until 1974. Always a great supporter of Israel, he was the second president of the Jewish Federation of Ocean County, in 1981. Lawrence in survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Eileen Stein Lehman; son, Dr. Frederick Lehman of Toms River; and sister, Sylvia Schmaier of Boca Raton, Fla. Interment at Mt. Born in Beaver Falls, Pa., Mrs. Levin lived in Union before moving to Monroe 15 years ago. Before retiring in 1994, she was an administrative assistant for Puerto Rico Marine Management, where she worked for 12 years. Her husband, Elliot, died in 2003. Mrs. Levin is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Donna of Norwalk, Conn., and Jeffrey and Nicole of Philadelphia; and daughters and son-in-law, Barbara Levin of New York City and Joan and Bart Jefferson of Fairfax, Calif. His greatest joys were his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He worked in the garment industry as a wedding gown cutter for Sharmante Creations, New York City for many years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 71 years, Edith. Mr. Leo Menkin died on Dec. 7, 2008 at St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston. He was 93. Born in Newark, Mr. Menkin lived in Hillside for more than 60 years. He worked in his own business in Newark and Hillside for more than 50 years before retiring. He was active in numerous charitable causes and was a member of the B'nai B'rith in Hillside, where he served as president of their bowling league. Leo was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Mr. Menkin is survived by his sons, Norman and Kenneth; daughter, Nancy Jacobus; grandchildren, Rick, Michael, Jesse, Leigh and Rita; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Sami, Emma, Michael and Ryan. Interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels, Union. ROSEN. Mr. Richard Rosen died Nov. 19, 2008 at home after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 78. Born in Paterson, Mr. Rosen lived in Belmar and later Spring Lake Heights and Lakewood before moving to Florida full time. He attended Rutgers University and served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Jewish War Veterans. He then went on to become an entrepreneur, starting, running and ultimately selling many successful businesses. He was the owner, with his wife, Jan, of World of Clocks and Music Boxes, as well as a restaurant, tropical fish wholesale company, and realtor's office. He was an active member of his community in Ocala, Fla., running shuffleboard tournaments and playing water volleyball six days a week. He also started and ran a support group for diabetics in his community, and was a member of both the N.J. club and the Jewish club. He was predeceased by his wife of 20 years, Jan; and sister, Myrna Rosen-Byer. Mr. Rosen is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons and daughters-in-law Mark and Myrna of Port. St. Lucie, Fla., David and Debbe of Burlington, and Steven and Heather of Keansburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Mindy and Robert Kushner of Lawrenceville, and Robin and John Coburn of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; stepdaughter Barbara Kaiser and her husband Lance; stepson William Morgan and his wife Diana; grandchildren, Joshua Rosen, Janet, Beth and Alex Kushner, Justin Coburn, and Ashley Coburn and her husband, Morgan; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Mr. Isaac Weinberg died Dec. 15, 2008 at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He was 71 Born in Germany in 1947, Mr. Weinberg was the son of Holocaust survivors Sol and Esther (née Obligorski) Weinberg. Upon arrival to America, he lived in Jackson, Toms River and Lakewood, finally settling in Jackson 30 years ago. He was self-employed as a real estate investor, and was a member of Congregation Ahavat Shalom, Lakewood. Isaac is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Janice; his very dear mother, Esther; son, Jeff of Hoboken; daughters, Elissa of Hoboken, and Debbie of Philadelphia; and a sister, Sheila Small of East Windsor.
