THE JEWISH STATE February 12, 2010 BROWN. Mrs. Fannie Schwartz Brown died Feb. 2, 2010. She was 102. Born in Pittsburgh, Mrs. Brown served as a Red Cross aide during World War II rolling bandages, knitting sweaters and gloves for servicemen and women, and sending packages to those stationed overseas. Her civic volunteer duties included the Carteret PTA, local air raid warden, officer in the local Hadassah Chapter, and lifetime member in that organization. She made and donated hats for newborns to local hospitals. She was a friend and mentor to many. She was noted for her sewing, knitting, baking, and cooking; her recipes were enjoyed and eagerly asked for. She was an avid reader and enjoyed swimming, and played mah jongg and bridge. She never failed to vote in annual elections. She was sought for her good advice and counsel by a host of friends and acquaintances. Most of her years were spent in Carteret before she moved to Leisure Village East in Lakewood where she was a member of the garden, dance, sewing, and drafts clubs for more than 30 years. She was a good wife, mother, and sister, a kind and helping friend to many, a dedicated grandmother, and a doting great-grandmother. Her motto in life was to look at the bright side and for the goodness of people. Her longevity was a gift to all who knew her. Needless to say, while she will be missed, she will be remembered for her good deeds. She was predeceased by her husband, Judge Sidney J. Brown. Mrs. Brown is survived by her son and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Doris Brown, and Ann Brown; granddaughters and their husbands, Belinda and Dr. Joseph Cooper, and Pamela and Arthur Villaruz; and great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Alyssa Villaruz, and Jeffrey Cooper. Born in Vienna, Austria, Hella lived in Plainfield and Venice, Fla., before moving to Skillman in 2007. She was a homemaker, a member of Hadassah, and the JCC of Venice. She was a docent at the John Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Fla. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, art, and painting, and was an excellent seamstress. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Her husband, Max, died in 2006. She was also predeceased by her brother, Karl Ebner. Mrs. Bussel is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Ted Gast, and Gloria and Eric Koster; grandchildren, David Gast, Julie Feinberg, Megan Gordon, and Charles and Alexander Koster; and great-grandchildren, Zoe and Marley Feinberg, and Joshua and Zackery Gast. West High St., Somerville, N.J. 08876. KLAHR. Mrs. Elsa Malligson Klahr died Feb. 8, 2010, at Arbor Glen Continuing Care Community, Bridgewater. She was 103. Elsa and her husband, Herman, were refugees of Nazi Germany. She followed her husband to America in 1939 after he found work in Newark, Del., where they were founding members of Temple Beth El. She was deeply loved and respected by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Her huband, Herman, died in 1970. Elsa is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn Klahr Maron of Somerset, Irene and Dr. Willliam Miller of Woodbridge, Conn., and Stefanie and Dr. Jerome Spivack of Watchung; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. MAHLER. Mrs. Harriet (nee Bruck) Mahler died peacefully Feb. 6, 2010, after a brief illness. She was 88. Born in Rockaway Beach, Harriet grew up in Arverne. She was betrothed to her returning World War II Captain Charles Mahler in 1946 and they had a beautiful and special 55-year marriage. A homemaker, she lived in Woodmere, New York, and Lake Worth, Florida before moving to The Brookside in Freehold six years ago. She always had kind words for everyone and a beautiful smile. She was truly an amazing woman. Even in the face of adversity with her declining health, she managed plenty of smiles. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles. Mrs. Mahler is survived by her children and their families, Jane and John Jennings of Freehold, Nancy Harrison and Stan Regan of Oceanside, N.Y., and Dr. Harvey and Jude Mahler of Evanston, Ill.; grandchildren, Jessica Jennings, Mitchell Harrison, Amy and her husband, Yoav Citron, Betsy and her husband, Mark Jeacoma, Whitney Mahler, and Jared Mahler; six great-grandchildren; and many cousins. Mrs. Myrna Beth Schulman died Feb. 1, 2010, at Bethesda Memorial Hospital, Boynton Beach, Fla. She was 68. Born in Trenton, Myrna lived in Middletown before moving to Jackson six years ago. Prior to retiring, she was a supervisor in medical records at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank for more than 25 years. Mrs. Schulman is survived by her husband, Paul; sons and daughters-in-law, Aaron and Robin of Oak Hill, Va., and Stuart and Michele of Freehold; sister and brother-in-law, Roberta and Kerry Wojick of Delray Beach, Fla.; and grandchildren, Jenna, Jared, Megan, Sara, and Tyler. Born in Newark, Mrs. Sollish lived in Linden before moving to Freehold. She and her husband owned and operated Linden Stove and Supply Company, Linden, for 28 years before their retirement. Her husband, Herbert Sollish, died in 1995. Mrs. Sollish is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Dalle Sollish of Morganville, and Carole and Donald Kaplan of Freehold; brother and sister-in-law, Irving and Barbara Reitman; grandchildren, Bruce Kaplan, Keith Levine, and Megan Levine; and four great-grandchildren. Interment at Beth Israel Memorial Park, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold. SUSSMAN. Mr. Norman N. Sussman died Feb. 5, 2010, at home. He was 89. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Sussman lived most of his life in New Rochelle, N.Y., before moving to Manchester 17 years ago. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, New Rochelle, N.Y., for 15 years before retiring 25 years ago. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He belonged to and served as post commander the Jewish War Veterans and the Romeos, both in Leisure Village West. He was also a member of the Masons. His wife, Charlotte Isaacs Sussman, died in 2005. Mr. Sussman is survived by his daughter, M. Sue Gerry of Teaneck; son, Brian H. of New Rochelle, N.Y.; brother, Sidney of Somers, N.Y.; and a grandson, Joshua Gerry. Interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. Arrangements by Oliverie Funeral Home, Manchester. YOUNG. Mrs. Freda Berlowitz Young died at home Jan. 28, 2010. She was four days shy of her 88th birthday. Born in Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan in 1922, Freda grew up in the Bronx, the first child born to parents who had emigrated from Lithuania. At the age of 19, she married Bernard Young of Brooklyn. Their 53-year marriage, filled with love and devotion to one another, produced three children and four grandsons. As was typical of the time, free moments were spent with family and friends, filling one relatives' home or another with children and food, and adults talking. Countless friends and family have memories of these numerous times spent together over dozens of years. Both New Yorkers, they found their home in Plainfield, and became very active in the community. Freda was a volunteer dispatcher for the Plainfield Rescue Squad, she recorded for the blind, was president of the Temple Beth El Sisterhood, and volunteered for numerous events in the Plainfield public schools that her children attended. She lived through the Depression, was an Air Force wife during World War II, and trained and became a professional lighting consultant at Capital Lighting in Watchung. A 20-year resident of Plainfield, and then Piscataway and Monroe, her final home was in Arlington, Va. She was predeceased by her sister Minka; her husband Bernard; and a grandson, Aaron. Mrs. Young is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Janice Gerard of Arlington, and Nancy and Alan Soschin of Springfield, Va.; son, Michael of Philadelphia; grandsons, Danny and his wife Sydney Soschin, Charles Soschin, and Jesse Gerard; and brothers, Laurence Berlowitz of Massachusetts, and Arthur Berlowitz of California. Interment at Beth Israel Memorial Park, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Higgins Home for Funerals, Plainfield.
