GIMLAN. Mr. Lewis Epstein died Feb. 5, 2009. He was 101. Mrs. Hattie Lucas Gimlan died Feb. 10, 2009, in the Medical Center at Princeton. She was 92. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Hattie lived in Carmel and Far Rockaway, N.Y., before moving to Monroe 11 years ago. She was an avid volunteer, bringing music programs to the children of the Rockaways, and in later years tutoring adult students at New Brunswick P.S. Adult Learning Center. Her fondest memories were spending time with family, especially at her Sagamore Lake home in Carmel. Her first husband, Harry Binder, died in 1971; her daughter, Nancy Doery, died in 2003. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Georgette Ettman, Claire Rescher and Gay Pearce. Mrs. Gimlan is survived by her husband of 33 years, Moshe Himlan; daughters, Judy Kesin Faherty and her husband, Dave, of Whitehouse Station, and Ada Gimlan of Bayside, N.Y.; sons, Alan Binder and his wife, Cheryl, of Tolland, Mass., and Gideon Gimlan and his wife, Joni, of Los Gatos, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gail Tamara Gobar died Feb. 21, 2009, at Hospice by the Sea, Boca Raton, Fla., surrounded by her loving daughters. She was 68. Born in the Bronx, Gail was an only child. The family moved to Yonkers, N.Y., when she was 10 years old, and that's where she grew up and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She was accepted to New York Medical College and Flower and Fifth Ave. Hospital School of Nursing, where she met her future husband, Seymour, who was head technician in the X-ray department and specialized in cardiac catherizations. During her senior years she worked closely with Dr. Charles Bailey, the father of open heart surgery, passed her state boards and became an RN with a cardiology specialty. She worked with Dr. Bailey as head nurse of his cardiology floor until her marriage on Nov. 10, 1962 when she and Sy moved to Lakewood. Gail became head nurse and supervisor at the then Fitkin Hospital. In later years, after her children were born, she worked there part time nights and also worked part time nights as supervisor at the new Medicenter of America in Lakewood, owned by the Zweben family. In the early 1970s, Gail became the leader in the fight against forced busing in the Lakewood school system, and served on the board of education. She ran the political campaigns of many local and state candidates, and was well known for her work on the campaigns of Sen. Bob Singer and Gov. Tom Keane. From 1981-87 Gail rescued the dying Lakewood YMCA and became administrator of handicapped programming. She also served as the governor's appointee to the Juvenile Alcohol Prevention Advisory Board; troop leader of Ocean County Girl Scouts; coordinator for Pop Warner girls activities in Lakewood; and in many other roles. She wrote a column for two Ocean County weekly newspapers, "Lakewood Tid-Bits" and was editor of her college alumni newspaper for 25 years. Her poems were published in an anthology, "Where Dawn Lingers" in 1990. Gail was very proud to have been named in "Who's Who of American Women" in 1989. She was also an active member of Congregation Ahavat Shalom in Lakewood, served on the Sisterhood board, and edited the synagogue newsletter. She was on the board of Congregation Dov `v' Schmuel. Over the years, she was the recipient of many awards, and was very proud of the resolution from the N.J. State Legislature in honor of Israel's 60th birthday. She was predeceased by her parents, Anne and Jack Ossin, and her adored husband of 45 years, "Sy". Gail is survived by her very loving daughters, Bonnie, of Lakewood, and Tammy, of Coconut Creek, Fla. Interment at the Freehold Hebrew Cemetery, Freehold. Mr. Jerome Irving Greenberg died Feb. 4, 2009, at Kimball Medical Center. He was 84. Born in the Bronx, Jerry came to Lakewood in 1959, moving to Lake Ridge in 1997. He served in the U.S. Navy, in the Pacific Theater, during World War II 1943-1945. In 1963, he and his father, Morris, founded Maegreen Gifts, a store that became an institution in Lakewood. He became an integral part of Lakewood civic life. He founded the first Lakewood Redevelopment Agency 40 years ago. Involved in Lakewood youth sports, he was president of Lakewood Pop Warner Football League, in charge of all the teams and cheerleaders; was an umpire with the Lakewood Little League; served in the MVA Commission for 20 years and on the township committee for many years; and was mayor of Lakewood four different times from 1988, 1992, and 1996. Jerry was the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1989; Hispanic Man of the Year in 1990; in 1991, Jerry was honored at a dinner and awarded a sterling silver PBA card; and B'nai B'rith named him Man of the Year in 1992. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Betty of Pomona, N.Y., Richard and Marietta of Mount Laurel, and Andrew and Patrice of Toms River; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Ronald Engel of Toms River; brother, Stuart of Tarzana, Calif.; loving grandchildren, Debra, Michele, Amy, Zack, Marcy, Lisa, Valerie, and Paul; and great-grandchildren, Rebeka, TJ, Tyler Kaelyn, Jackson, Evan, and Kyle. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Haber was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was also a member of Hadassah and B'nai B'rith Women. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Herman. Mrs. Haber is survived by her adoring sons, Jonathan ofNorth Caldwell, Jerry of New York, and Eugene of New York; and cherished grandchildren, Melanie, Daniel, Andrew and Matthew. Born in the Bronx, Mr. Hafter lived in Rockville, Md., before moving to Monroe six months ago. Before retiring, he was a budget analyst for the Department of Veterans' Affairs, Washington, where he worked for 30 years. He was a member of the Jewish Congregation of Concordia, Monroe. Mr. Hafter is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dorothy Greenspan Hafter; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Michael Davidowitz of East Windsor; son and fiancée, Michael Hafter and Jennifer Silverman; sister and brother-in-law, Arden and Steven Leder of Deer Park, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews, Robert and Renee Greenspan and Eric and Jaime Leder. Mr. Bernard Levine died Feb. 16, 2009 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. He was 74. Born in the Bronx, Bernard lived in New Jersey for many years, moved to California for 27 years, then to Whiting three years ago. He was a member of Temple Beth Am Shalom in Lakewood. He served in the Army 1954-55, and was a partner in EDI Express, a transportation company in Gardena, Calif., until his retirement six years ago. Mr. Levine is survived by his beloved wife, Rose; sons and daughters-in-law, Frank J. and Peggy of Warren, David J. of Whiting, and Alan P. and Sharon of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Edna Sasso of Whiting; and grandchildren, Anthony "Max", Samuel, Emmett, Joshua and Paul. Radler died at home in Concordia Feb. 22, 2009. He was 78. Mr. Radler, a Weequahic High School graduate, received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Montclair State and his specialist degree from Rutgers. He was an elementary school principal with the Belford, Port Monmouth and Navesink schools in Middletown. He retired in 1993 after 36 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Rose and Arthur Radler, and his sister, Ethel Radler, all of Maplewood. Mr. Radler is survived by his beloved wife, Faith Feld Radler; daughters, Tova Gass, husband, Eli, and sons, Yossie, Ari and Avi; Cindy Feureisen, husband, David, and children, Alana and Adam; sister, Leah Brochstein, husband, Harry, and sons, Dr. Robert and Michael Feldman, their wives and children. RICH. Mr. Howard David Rich died suddenly on Dec. 28, 2008 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, surrounded by his family. He was 63. Mr. Rich grew up in Highland Park and attended Trenton State College. He was most recently president of The Concierge Inc., a promotional product and marketing company. Prior to this he was owner and president of ST&L Associates, an advertising agency, for many years. He was a member of BNI Association and supported many non-profit organizations including the Special Olympics. He was predeceased by his father, Herman, and a brother, Rich. Mr. Rich is survived by his mother, Irene Goldman Rich of Somerset; wife, Phyllis Bernstein Rich of North Brunswick; sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan and Jenny of Lawrenceville and Jason and Kim of Bedminster; grandchildren, Shane, Shelby and Ethan; sister, Judy Rich Buckner of Rockville, Md.; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Rubin lived in Colonia for 35 years before moving to Monroe 13 years ago. She was a salesperson with Stern's department store in Woodbridge. She was a Brandeis Woman and a life-member of Hadassah. She was a former member of Congregation Ohev Shalom, Colonia. Mrs. Rubin is survived by her beloved husband, Milton; her loving children, Daniel Rubin and his wife, Elizabeth Hawkins of Santa Rosa, Calif., Debra Rubin of New Brunswick, and Miriam Rubin of Cranbury; dear brothers, Donald Chait of Linden and Boyce Chait of Springfield; and cherished granddaughters, Amanda, Sydney and Olivia Rubin. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan. SPERO. Mrs. Fay M. Spero died Jan. 27, 2009 at Tallwoods Care Center in Bayville. She was 92. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Fay married her beloved, Morton John. They moved to Howell and, seven years later, they settled in Lakewood, where they lived for 47 years and were members of Temple Beth Am. She finally settled in Toms River. Always the quintessential homemaker, Fay's main interest and love were her family. Even in her final days a visit from her grandchildren never failed to cheer her up. Her dear husband of 56 years, Morton John, died in 2003. Fay is survived by her loving children, son and daughter-in-law, David and Marci of Manchester, and daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Niels Sperling of Bayville; brother, Lou Mazur of Virginia Beach, Va.; loving grandchildren, Drew, Brian, Stacey, Scott and Corey; and great-grandson, Noah. Mrs. Beatrice Fleishman Steinman died Feb. 15, 2009 at Regency Heritage Nursing Home, Somerset. She was 96. Born in Perth Amboy, Mrs. Steinman lived in Highland Park for more than 60 years. She sold Israeli Bonds for many years. She was predeceased by her husband, George; daughter, Barbara Goldstone; and six brothers and sisters. Mrs. Steinman is survived by her grandchildren, Steven Goldstone and his wife Faith of East Brunswick, and Joyce Wank and her husband Edward of Edison.
