Poetry Place: Elections

January 2, 2009

No matter, what good laws are put in use,

But if they are upheld by fools and dirty crooks,

Dishonest rogues will always manage to abuse

The best of rules:

     to profit,

      steal,

      and "cook the books".

Wolf tried to buy from Lion the Head of Sheep position.

The homework is done:

          Wolf's soul-mate Fox

Dropped friendly word to Lioness,

          sponsor of the flocks --

So, everything is set to beat the competition.

But to avoid the allegation

Of cronyism rampant in the Wood

And fend off gripes about Wolf's reputation,

The Town Meeting is assembled,

          making good

On pre-election promise to the populace:

Confer, when the important choices face

The government.

          With Wolf's background studies

One after other, come his friends and buddies

And praise Wolf as a kind and caring politician.

And not a single voice is raised in opposition.

Thus Wolf gets his appointment to care for Sheep.

His friends rejoice ... ,

yet in Sheep's quarters gloom runs deep.

"But wouldn't Sheep promote their choice,

Expressed concerns and used the voters' voice?"

To tell the truth,

          some did not dare,

The others would not care;

While many loved Wolf's rhetoric and chose to wait --

And yet, the meeting was about their fate!
