ARSHAN. IN MEMORY ARSHAN. Mr. Samuel Arshan died July 9, 2009, in the Regency Manor Care and Rehabilitation Center, Somerset. He was 93.

Born in the Bronx, Mr. Arshan lived in Highland Park for many years. He graduated from City College of New York and was the president and CEO of Middlesex Foods Wholesale Grocery, Highland Park. He was the captain for the Food & Beverage Division of the Community Chest, which later became the United Way. He served as vice president and then president of the YM/YWHA of Highland Park for several years. He was chair of the allocation committee of the Jewish Federation of Raritan Valley, a member of the board of directors of Rutgers' University Hillel Foundation, and financial officer of the board of directors of the Jewish Family Service of Southern Middlesex County. An avid Bridge player, he was a Silver Life Master of Duplicate Bridge.

Mr. Arshan is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Zweibel Arshan; sons and their spouses, Norman and Judy of South Brunswick, Stephen and Kathy of South Amboy, and Melvyn and Pat of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; sister, Marsha Kespe of Spring Valley, N.Y.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Irving and Gert Klaus of Highland Park; sister-in-law, Sylvia Yoskowitz of Monroe; grandchildren Mark, Jill, Sherrod, Mandy, and Nicole Arshan; and great-grandsons, Wyatt and Truman Arshan. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

BRINSTEIN.Mr. Stanley Brinstein died July 4, 2009, at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington. He was 82.

Born in New Brunswick, Mr. Brinstein lived in Phoenix for five years before coming back to New Brunswick. He has been living in North Brunswick for the past several years. He attended the University of Southern California, George Washington University, and Rutgers University, and worked for many years as a United States Postal Service representative. He had a brilliant mind and enjoyed discussing politics and political theory. He was a member of Congregation Poile Zedek and Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, both of New Brunswick. During World War II he served with the Navy Seabees in the Pacific.

Mr. Brinstein is survived by his sisters, Joan Sassenoff of North Brunswick and Irma Henry of East Brunswick, as well numerous nieces and nephews. Interment at Poile Zedek Cemetery, New Brunswick. BROWN.Mr. Maxwell A. Brown died July 7, 2009, at the Care One Facility, Wall. He was 102.

Max was an electrical engineer at Fort Monmouth, a military liaison for several electronic firms and a member of IEEE. He was a member of Congregation Agudath Achim since 1941 and was on the board of directors. He served on the Israel Bond Drive since its inception and was lucky enough to visit Israel many times. He was a member of the Jewish National Fund, a charter member of ARMDI, a member of B'nai B'rith and numerous other charities dealing with the Jewish community. He received many honors and recognition from these many organizations over his long life for his dedication and support to their causes. Max and his wife, Hilda, were the oldest married couple to fly on El AL in 2006, for which they were given a chocolate cake! He and his wife resided in Bradley Beach in their own home for those 69 years, where they raised their family.

Mr. Brown is survived by his beloved wife of close to 69 years, Hilda Charles Brown; son and daughter-in-law, Allan and Magda of Buckeye, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Howard Wasserman of Egg Harbor; grandchildren, Jason Wasserman of Portland, Ore., Eric and Christine Brown of Venice, Calif., and Marc and Fanny Wasserman of Egg Harbor; and many nieces and nephews. COHEN.Mr. Ronald Paul Cohen died July 4, 2009, at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

Originally from Bayonne, Mr. Cohen lived in Union for many years before moving to East Windsor in 1991. After serving with the Army, he became an entrepreneur, running several businesses. For the last 25 years he was a salesman with Falcon Supply Company, Inc., Avenel. He was a brother with the Knights of Pythias, serving in various roles throughout the years. He was also a member of Beth El Synagogue, East Windsor. He was an automobile aficionado, but his favorite pastime was spending cherished moments with his family; he greatly enjoyed watching his grandsons play sports and rarely missed a game. Affectionately called "Poppy," he will be dearly missed and remembered by all who knew him.

Mr. Cohen is survived by his wife, Ticha; children, Jayne and Kenneth Sanders of Robbinsville, and Jacquelyn and Steven Mollen of Evergreen, Colo.; grandsons, Jonathan and Benjamin Sanders; and sister, Bonnie Miller of Lauderhill, Fla. Interment at Washington Cemetery, South Brunswick. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick.

FASS. Philip Fass, DDS, died July 11, 2009, at home. He was 96.

Born in Newark, Dr. Fass lived in Edison before moving to Monroe 26 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1983, he was a dentist with a private practice in Perth Amboy 1937-1983. A 1931 graduate of Perth Amboy High School, Dr. Fass graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1936. He served as intern and chief of the dental clinic at Marlboro State Hospital, and was chair of the committee to fluoridate Perth Amboy's water. He served in the Air Force 1953-1955 and was a wing dental surgeon at U.S.A. Hospital, Perrin Air Force Base, Sherman, Texas. He was also past president of the Middlesex County Dental Society and served on the Emeritus Dental Staff of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, JFK Medical Center, Edison, and Perth Amboy General Hospital. His first wife, Marion, died in 1994. He was also predeceased by sisters Tena Fass and Lillian Friedman.

Dr. Fass is survived by his wife, Dora Frost Fass; daughter, Michele "Miffy" Fass Gary and her husband, Hal, of Monroe; son, Michael of Edison; granddaughter, Lisa Jones and her husband, Lester, and Alison Gary-Otto and her husband, Matt; and great-grandchildren, Daniel and Alec. FRANKEL. Mr. David Frankel died June 24, 2009. He was 91.

Born in Brooklyn, David was the oldest of six and the only son. He attended Franklin K. Lane High School, and received his B.A. from the College of the City of New York, with a major in accounting and a minor in education. He received his CPA license in 1941, and his MBA from City College, majoring in statistics. Prior to serving in World War II in the Air Force, he worked for the War Production Board in Washington. as an analyst. After his military service, he pursued a career in accounting as an auditor, chief accountant, and controller with various private companies until his retirement in 1986. In 1958, David moved with his wife, Ann, and his two daughters from Queens to Metuchen, where his children were raised. A member of Temple Neve Shalom in Metuchen, he served on the board of directors as treasurer. After selling their home they moved to Rossmoor in Monroe, where David again served as board treasurer of the Rossmoor Jewish Congregation. He and his wife also spent part of each winter in their Century Village condo in Boca Raton. His beloved wife of 56 years, Ann, died in 2004.

Mr. Frankel is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen Frankel and Herb Levine, and Barbara Frankel and Bob Teichmann; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. FRIEDMAN. Dorothy. Mrs. Dorothy Friedman died July 11, 2009, at Magnolia Gardens, Toms River. She was 92.

Born in New York City, Dorothy settled in Toms River in 1945 with her beloved husband, William. She helped him run the hatchery he operated in Toms River, and later owned the well-known Dorothy's Youth Center for 20 years. She always worked very hard for her family. She was a past member of Congregation B'nai Israel. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, William. Her cherished son, Michael, died in 1990. Her family wants to thank Magnolia Gardens for making her last years active and comfortable.

Mrs. Friedman is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, George and Sharon of Framingham, Mass., and David and Mary Ellen of Toms River; grandchildren, Jenna and Jamie; and great-grandchildren, Jack, Kate, and Sam. Interment at Toms River Jewish Community Cemetery, Whitty Road, Toms River. Arrangements by Belkoff-Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Lakewood. HALPERT. Mr. Michael Halpert died July 1, 2009. He was 31.

Born in Livingston, Michael graduated from Verona High school and went on to receive his associate's of science degree from Morris County College, and then his bachelor of arts degree from Montclair State University in May 2003. On March 26, 2008, Michael joined the Navy and, upon completion of boot camp, went on to the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Conn., where he attended Basic Enlisted Submarine School, Electronics Technician "A" School and ET Navigation School. He had just recently successfully completed the Petty Officer Selectee Leadership Course and was promoted to Petty Officer Status. Petty Officer Halpert was currently awaiting assignment as a Navigation Electronics Technician aboard the USS Memphis (SSN 691). He was preceded in death by his father, Miles.

Michael is survived by his mother and step-father, Maxine and Paul Gilson of Eatontown. Michael will be incredibly missed by all of his aunts, uncles, cousins, and beloved extended family and friends. The funeral service, with military honors, was held at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge.

HELLER. Mrs. Elizabeth A. Heller died July 2, 2009, at Somerset Medical Center. She was 78.

Born in Richmond, Va., Liz grew up in Philadelphia. She graduated from Frankford High School there and attended Penn State University. She has been a resident of Somerville since 1960. She had many interests, including art, woodworking, furniture making, playing the piano, and spending time at the beach in Ocean City, Md., with her family. She loved things that brought her into contact with people, especially her work driving limousines to and from New York City, and her time at the Jewish Federation of Somerset County. She could be happy sitting in a bar watching her son Bert play guitar or gathering odds and ends to create a "sculpture" in the Louise Nevelson style. She built her own woodworking shop in the dining room and created tables and chairs, as well as bunk beds for the kids from there. She was kind to everyone she met, and cared more about others than herself. Her kindness extended to the turtles that lived in the bathtub and the wild birds that flew around the house while recovering from various injuries. She will be missed by all who knew her and were warmed by her smile.

Mrs. Heller is survived by her husband of 56 years, Charles; sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Mary, Randy and Julie, Charles and Diane, and Robert and Lori; grandchildren, Charles, Stephen, Melissa, Jenna, and Joey; and great-grandsons, Georgie and Andrew. KAUFMAN. Mrs. Fran Kaufman died June 28, 2009, in a house filled with family at the end of a warm sunny day when her youngest grandson pitched the game of his life. She was 74.

Born Frances Fink and raised by Evy and Sam Fink in New York City, in her youth Mrs. Kaufman studied acting and dance at the famed Professional Children's School. She attended Ithaca College and graduated from Adelphi University. Fran and Jack were married for more than 50 years. They raised their family in Roslyn Heights, N.Y. Alongside her husband, Fran managed "The Barefoot Girls," a fashion accessories company. They moved to Lakewood in 2000. Fran loved Manhattan, Wednesday matinees, and all manner of dance and art. She loved her family even more and was endlessly generous. She was quick to spout "I love you," never forgot to send a card for any occasion, and never, ever showed up empty handed. Once Fran met you, you became her friend for life. Her husband of more than 50 years, Jack, died in 2005.

Fran is survived by her daughters, Margot Goldberg of Rumson, and Jill Kaufman, of Hadley, Mass.; sons-in-law, Stuart Goldberg and Av Harris; grandchildren, Peter, Samantha, and Dustin Goldberg, and Lily and Nora Harris; brother, Martin Brooks; nephews and nieces; brother-in-law, Stanley Kaufman; and many dear friends around the world. We love you Franny/Mom/Franma/Grandma, and we will miss you terribly. We know Captain Jack has brought you into safe harbor. Interment at Beth David Cemetery, Elmont, N.Y. MARANTZ.Mrs. Anna (Spindel) Marantz died July 11, 2009, at home. She was 95.

Born in Connecticut, Mrs. Marantz' early years were spent in New York City. She lived in New Brunswick for many years before moving to California in 1972. A charitable, friendly and active individual, she was a proficient poet, and an adept artist who painted in several media. She was known to be a champion Scrabble player. Known throughout her life for her generous nature she always had an appropriate gift for visiting children. She was a member of Congregation Poile Zedek for more than 70 years. Her husband, Morris, died in 1978.

Mrs. Marantz is survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws, Calvin and Myra Marantz of Orange, Calif., Steven and Leslie of Dallas; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.; sister-in-law, Edith M. Schwartz of Highland Park; and brother-in-law, Marvin of Somerset. Interment at Poile Zedek Cemetery, New Brunswick. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick.

MUPSIK.Mr. Herman Mupsik died June 30, 2009. He was 90.

Mr. Mupsik was a pharmacist for many years in Hoboken and a member of Congregation Ohav Zedek. Interment at Baron Hirsch Cemetery, Staten Island. Arrangements by Gutterman Bros., Bayonne.

ROSEN.Mr. Stanley W. Rosen died July 6, 2009, after a long illness, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 76.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mr. Rosen graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1950. He earned a bachelor's degree with highest honors from Brooklyn College in 1957 and received a juris doctor from Brooklyn Law School in 1961, where he was a member of Law Review and graduated at the top of his class. He proudly served in the Air Force 1953-1957 during the Korean Conflict, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He lived in Old Bridge 1971-93, then moved to Marlboro. He retired after a 30-year career as a practicing attorney and then as corporate vice president with Sun Chemical/Sequa Corporation. In retirement, he began a second career appearing in community theater. He took an active interest in local politics, proudly serving on Marlboro Township Ethics Board. He was co-chair of the political awareness committee at the Greenbriar at Marlboro, where he organized debates for local, state, and congressional elections.

Mr. Rosen is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Loretta; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey of East Brunswick, and Marshall and Marie of Marlboro; daughter and son-in-law, Allyson and David Fournier of North Andover, Mass.; grandchildren, Haley, Robyn, Danielle, Michael, and Marley; brother, Ted of Great Neck, N.Y.; and sister, Susan Keilson of Hewlett, N.Y.
