Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket BENNETT. Mr. Arthur Bennett of the Iselin section of Woodbridge Township died July 13, 2007, at home. He was 83 years old.

Born in Boston, Mr. Bennett lived in Iselin for the past 51 years. A decorated Army veteran, he served in the 4th Infantry during World War II and participated in six major battles, including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. A graduate of Upsala College, He was a representative with John Hancock Insurance Co. for 41 years. Later, he was a union negotiator and president emeritus of Local 167-I, UFCW, and past president of Area Council 2AUFCW. He was a former member of Temple Adath Israel in Woodbridge and a member of Congregation Neve Shalom in Metuchen. He also was a member of the American Legion T. Nulty Post 471 in Iselin, Junior Vice Commander of Jewish War Veterans Post 43 in Woodbridge, and was a past treasurer of the North Newark J-Vets. His wife, Shirley May Jenkins Bennett, died in 2001. Mr. Bennett is survived by his son, Robert E. Bennett, Esq. of Tesser & Cohen, and his wife, Marjorie McKeever Bennett of Lumberton; grandsons, Jonathon Harris Bennett and Aaron Prescott Bennett; and brother-in-law and good friend, Joseph K. Morris. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge. Arrangements by Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, Avenel. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket FRIEDER. Mr. Jacob Frieder of Lakewood passed away suddenly on July 1, 2007, in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. He was 89.

A longtime resident of Newark, Mr. Frieder lived in Clark and Delray Beach, Fla., before moving back to Lakewood in the fall of 2005. He was a January 1936 graduate of Weequahic High School, where he is remembered as the athlete to score the first touchdown in school history, and the winning touchdown to give Weequahic its first football victory. He was a World War II veteran, rising to the rank of sergeant. He retired from the Newark Post Office after 33 years of service as a clerk and a supervisor. He was a past president of the Jewish Civil Service Fellowship, an organization of postal employees, a member of the Knights of Pythias, and was instrumental in organizing the Clark Tenants Association in the mid-70s, prior to moving to Florida. His activism continued in his new home state, where he served as president of the condominium association at the Pines of Delray West for 14 years. Mr. Frieder is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Lenore (nee Fendrich) of Lakewood; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Donald Smith of Brick; son, Kenneth of Abington, Pa.; grandchildren, Jonathan and Elliot Frieder, Lesley Wolf and Alison Smith; sister, Esther Frieder of Delray Beach; and four great-grandchildren. Interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements by the Goldstein Funeral Chapel Inc., Edison. Donations in Jacob's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket HERZ. Mr. Larry Herz of Monroe died July 13, 2007, at home. He was 88.

Born in Germany, Mr. Herz lived in Fairlawn for 30 years before moving to Monroe in 1986. He was the owner of Economy Meats Inc., Elizabeth, for 40 years, retiring in 1986. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the Fairlawn Jewish Center for 30 years and a member of the Bronx Jewish soccer club. His wife of 43 years, Gisella, died in 1992. Mr. Herz is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Howard Kracoff of Manalapan and Sharon and Bob Fields of Pine Brook; grandchildren, David, Donna, Evan, Michael and Alex; and great-granddaughter, Hailey Genna. Interment at Beth El Cemetery, Paramus. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan. Donations may be made to Deborah Hospital or Hadassah.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket MAROWITZ. Mr. Abe "Spike" Marowitz, formerly of Deal, died July 6, 2007, at University Medical Center at Princeton. He would have been 94 on July 20.

Born in New Brunswick in 1913, the son of Russian immigrants, Frank and Kate, Mr. Marowitz was one of five siblings. He was an avid athlete, competing on his school basketball, football, diving and gymnastics teams. His nickname, "Spike," was bestowed on him by his junior varsity basketball coach and it stuck throughout his life. He was ever the entrepreneur. Responding to a lack of jobs, he started a sandwich shop in his late teens, which launched his career in business. This culminated in his co-founding of Jersey Coast Tobacco & Candy Company in South Belmar in 1946, where he was the driving force in becoming a major player in the industry. Spike received many industry awards for excellence in innovation and character in his field. He was selected to serve on the board of directors of First National Bank in Belmar as a result of his overall respect in the community as a business leader and friend. In World War II, he interrupted his business career by serving his country as a sergeant in the Army. He was stationed mostly on Christmas Island in the South Pacific. Spike loved golf, pool, and bowling with his family and friends. He was a member of B'nai B'rith, the Masons, and a chapter commander of the Jewish War Veterans. He was predeceased by his brothers, Marty and Hym; a sister, Sadie; and his first wife, Adeline Novik. Mr. Marowitz is survived by his sons, Jay, David, and Norman; his wife, Mili; brother, Alex; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket MERKIN. Mrs. Marilyn Merkin, of Monroe Township, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on July 12, 2007, at the Cranbury Care Center, Monroe. She was 76.

Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Merkin moved to Perrineville in March of 1956 with her husband, Marty, and a three-month-old son to live on an egg farm. Over the years, the farm grew to be one of the largest egg-producing farms in the state. She and her husband have been members since 1958 of the Perrineville Jewish Center, where Mrs. Merkin served as a board member for several years. After residing in Perrineville for 37 years, she and her husband moved to Clearbrook Adult Community in Monroe. She was a loving woman who enjoyed cooking many holiday dinners over the years. In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing mah jongg and cards. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Merkin is survived by sons, Steven and Joel; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Norman Weistuch; grandchildren, Jason and Jennifer Merkin and Corey and Jessica Weistuch; sisters-in-law, Ronnie Seligman, the wife of Marilyn's late brother, Stanley, Ardell Laster, Audrey Grantier, and Henny Merkin; brothers-in-law, Al Merkin, Jack Laster, and John Grantier; five nephews; five nieces; 13 grandnieces and grandnephews; five great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; and many friends. Interment at the Perrineville Jewish Cemetery. Arrangements by The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket MURZIN-LIPSON. Mrs. Sylvia Murzin-Lipson (nee Gold) died July 4, 2007, at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 75.

Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Murzin-Lipson live in Queens before moving to Monroe 15 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1991, she was a school administrator for the New York City Board of Education, Queens, for 30 years. A member of the board of directors of the Association for the Advancement of Blind and Retarded, she was a passionate and tireless advocate, devoting her life and service to the developmentally disabled. With determination and vision, she helped shape the future of AABR, opening doors for families who needed services. She was predeceased by her first husband, Carl Theodore. Mrs. Murzin-Lipson is survived by her husband, Stanley; daughter, Deborah Axman of Baltimore; sons and daughter-in-law, Steven, and Matthew and Sandra, all of Manhattan; step-children, Betty Cohen of Queens, Ira Lipson of Marlboro, and Jack Lipson and wife Jackie of Long Island; and seven grandchildren. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket RUBINFELD. Mr. Alan Rubinfeld of Morris died July 9, 2007. He was 61.

Born in Newark, Mr. Rubinfeld was raised in Hillside and Livingston and lived in East Brunswick for 20 years before moving to Morris eight years ago. He and his family spent summers on Long Beach Island. He began his career at Price Waterhouse and served as chief financial officer at a number of companies. Most recently, he was a partner at Tatum, LLC, New York City. He received a B.S. degree from Rider College and an M.B.A. from Seton Hall University. He went on to become a member of the Rider University business advisory board, as well as the American Institute of CPAs, the N.J. Society of CPAs, and Financial Executive International. He was a member of the Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick, where he also served as a member on the board of trustees, and was a member of the JCC of Long Beach Island. He also served on the board of trustees of the Jewish Family Services of Middlesex County. Mr. Rubinfeld is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sue Kamler Rubinfeld; son, Adam of Danbury, Conn.; daughter, Lauren of New York City; brothers, David of Sparta, Joel of Morris Plains and Philip of Mendham; and two grandchildren. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel , New Brunswick.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket SCHILLIN. Mrs. Annabel Schillin 86, loving wife and mother, died July 11, 2007, at her residence, Daughters of Israel, West Orange. She was 86.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Schillin lived in Livingston for most of her life. A voracious reader and lover of the arts, she was vice president of Weight Watchers in Livingston before retiring. She was also one of the founding members of the Ruth Estrin Goldberg Association. She showed the best qualities of a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and businesswoman through her love of life, devotion to others, and in the gentle way she touched the lives of those around her. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Robert. Mrs. Schillin is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert Birkitt of Summit; loving son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Corinne Schillin of Newton, Mass.; grandchildren, Tamara Schillin, Emily Birkitt and Geoffrey Birkitt; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Howard Kanengiser of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; and many caring nieces, nephews and friends. Born in Germany, Mrs. Slifer came to the U.S. as an infant, and lived in Newark, Maplewood and in Livingston since 1973. She was a member of the National Council of Jewish Women and ORT. She was predeceased by her father, Philip Kram, and her brother, Dr. Joseph A. Kram. Mrs. Slifer is survived by her beloved husband, Arnold; children, Shari Slifer and Richard Slifer; mother, Bronya Kram; and brother, Dr. Harry B. Kram. Born in Bamberg, Germany, Mr. Weiss was a survivor of the Holocaust. He did volunteer work at Union Hospital emergency room for many years. His love of the opera and the game of chess were a few of his many pleasures in life. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria (nee Hymowitz). Mr. Weiss is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Fred, and Arlene and Tom; grandchildren, Renee, Kim Kristyn and Aaron; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Kevin, Ashley, Sarah and MacKenzie. Born in London, England, Mr. Young lived in New York City before moving to Lakewood in 1993. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II 1941-45, and last worked for the New York City board of education until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of Young Israel of Co-op City in the Bronx, Temple Beth Or in Brick and its Men's Club, the Knights of Pythias, and various social committees of Leisure Village East. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Yetta, and brothers, Nathan and Gus. Mr. Young is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Frances of Hazlet, and David and Nancy of East Brunswick; brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Irma of Sarasota, Fla.; and grandchildren, Michael, Lindsey, Brittany, Joshua, and Joseph.
