ALBALA. Mr. Jack Albala died June 17, 2009 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 87. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Albala lived in Cliffside Park before moving to Monroe 18 years ago. Before retiring in 1982 he owned Russ-Wear Undergarment, Manhattan, for 35 years. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Jewish Congregation of Concordia, Monroe, and the Sephardic Temple of Woodmere, N.Y. He also belonged to the Sephardic Home, Brooklyn, and B'nai B'rith. Mr. Albala is survived by his wife of 13 years, Helen Rosen Albala; son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Ivone of Huntington, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Interment at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, N.Y. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. ALEXANDER. Mr. Bertram Alexander died June 25, 2009 at Chateau at Rochelle Park. He was 82. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Alexander lived there until he moved to Monroe 14 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1982 he was a transit mechanic for the New York City Transit Authority in Brooklyn, where he worked for 30 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S. Monroe Chapter. Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beatrice Friedman Alexander son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Joan of Teaneck; daughter and son-in-law, Teena and Edward Anastasio of New Windsor, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. BELKOFF.Mr. Howard Barton Belkoff died June 2, 2009, at home in Las Vegas. He was 59. Born in Philadelphia, Howard was raised in Elizabeth. He came to Lakewood in 1977 and lived in Freehold before moving to Las Vegas in 1997. He attended Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire and graduated with a BA in Psychology. He was a graduate of American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, New York City. He established Belkoff Jewish Memorial Chapel in Lakewood in 1977, was trained to perform eye enucleation by the Eye Foundation of Delaware Valley. He was a member of Congregation Ahavat Shalom, Lakewood, where he was past president and treasurer, and of Chabad of Green Valley in Nevada. Howard was a gregarious and community minded individual and he was a member of the Lakewood Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Knights of Pythias, served on the board of the Solomon Schechter Academy of Ocean County, past president of Monmouth/Ocean Funeral Directors Association, past member of the JFDA, of the International Freelance Photographers Association, and member and historian of the Mustang and Classic Ford Club of Las Vegas. Most recently, he was self-employed, representing the "Send Out Cards" Greeting Card Co., and had been involved in recent real estate ventures. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Michael and Shirley Belkoff of Elizabeth; and his first wife, Gerri, in 1986. Mr. Belkoff is survived by his wife of 21 years, Barbara; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Ariala, and Eric; daughter, Robyn, all of Las Vegas; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Lawrence and Sherri of Lafayette Hill, Pa., and Dr. Kenneth and Sandra of Tucson, Ariz. Box 7, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057-0007. BERKOWITZ.Mr. Aaron Berkowitz died June 19, 2009 at home. He was 83. A pioneer and visionary in the auto industry, Mr. Berkowitz founded the Eastern Tool Warehouse Corp. and the ATD Marketing Group. He was chairman of the Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association, and was that industry's "Man of the Year" in 1997 and recipient of the "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2007. He served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. His positive attitude, boundless generosity, infinite wisdom, and lust for life were a model for all. He traveled and made friends all over the world. An amazing athlete in every sport he tried, he especially loved golf. He ran the New York Marathon in his 50s and climbed the Matterhorn and Kilimanjaro in his 70s. Most of all, he adored his family. Aaron is survived by Ruth, his favorite dancing partner and wife of more than 61 years of whom he said, "She still lights my fire." Also surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Jay Gartman, and Reva and Steve Fishner; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Linda Berkowitz; grandchildren, Carly Kuper and her husband, Rob, Sara Aufgang and her husband, Ari, Lev Gartman, Jonathan Fishner, Benjamin Fishner, Maya, Ezra and Khera Rufino; great-granddaughter, Lily Kuper; sister, Ruth Greenberg of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Brooklyn, Douglas was raised in Rockville Center, N.Y., before settling in Bridgewater in 1981. A Morris County attorney, he practiced estate and trust law in private practice. After graduating from the University of Rochester and Brooklyn Law School he earned an LLM from New York University. Additionally, he was president of Capital Enhancement, LLC in Morristown. He was past president of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Central Jersey chapter, a former member of Temple Shalom, and a member of the New York and New Jersey Bar Associations. He also became a life master playing bridge. Mr. Fromberg is survived by his wife of 33 years, Patricia; son, Richard; daughter, Marcy; brother, Jeffrey; and sister, Susan Fromberg Schaeffer and her husband Neil. Mrs. Elaine Hirsch died June 4, 2009 at home. She was 82. Born in New York City, Elaine grew up in Brooklyn. She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, and Hunter College in New York City, Class of 1948. She married her husband, Herb, in 1948 and lived with him in Elberon and Monmouth Beach. After raising her family as a devoted mother and wife, she was a partner in Jean Swartz Dress Shop in Deal for several years. She was an active member of Temple Beth Miriam, where she volunteered her time with the Sisterhood. Upon Herb's retirement, they moved to Palm Beach, where they lived for 20 years before returning to N.J. two years ago. Elaine lived for her family, and loved attending her grandchildren's recent weddings, bar mitzvahs, graduations and other events. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Herbert; and a son, Marc. Mrs. Hirsch is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Eileen of Nashua, N.H., and David and Shirley of Freehold; and grandchildren, Benjamin, Jessica, Allison, Matthew, Adam, Michele, and Michael. Born in Jersey City, Mr. Hornstein graduated from Lincoln High School. He attended New York University and NYU School of Law. He practiced law with his late father, Col. Isadore Hornstein in Jersey City. He was admitted to the bar in N.J. and N.Y. in 1955. He received a master's degree in special education in 2001 from New Jersey City University. He was a philanthropist throughout his life, serving as chair of the Hudson County Chapter of Bonds for Israel. Mr. Hornstein is survived by his wife, Rita; daughter, Sharon Gross-Cohen; and son-in-law, Gary Cohen. Interment at Temple Bnai Abraham Memorial Park. Arrangements by Gutterman Bros., Bayonne. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society. MASLIN. Mr. Nathan Maslin died June 22, 2009, at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 89. Born in Newark, Mr. Maslin lived in Highland Park for many years. A 1947 graduate of the Rutgers University School of Pharmacy, he was a pharmacist for 50 years. He owned and operated Alina Drugs, Elizabeth, for 25 years and then served as a pharmacist for the Rite Aid chain, primarily in Spotswood. For the past 10 years, he was the librarian and teacher at the Center School in Highland Park. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Force's "Flying Tigers" unit in China, India and Burma. He was a longtime member of the Jewish War Veterans Highland Park Post. His beloved wife, Adeline, died in 1966. Mr. Maslin is survived by his son, Scott of Lambertville; daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Rocco Gallo of Freehold, and Sheri and Russell Bertelsen of Howell; and grandchildren, Lindsey and Matthew Gallo and Alexander and Taylor Bertelsen. He was 65 years old. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Mendelson lived in Edison for the past 30 years. He was a former member of Temple Emanuel, Edison, and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Although his life was shorter than expected, his life was filled with more love than most. Mr. Mendelson is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Linda; his sons, Gregory and his fiancée, Stephanie, Robert and his wife, Jennifer, and Richard; his parents, Nisson and Goldie Mendelson; granddaughter, the light of his life, Isabella. He is survived also by a sense of humor passed on to his sons, which never failed to bring smiles to his loved ones and friends. Interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements by The Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Edison. SCHEPETINSKI. Mrs. Rose Schepetinski died June 15, 2009, at home. She was 95. Born in Monticello, N.Y., Mrs. Schepetinski grew up in Brooklyn. She attended Drake's Commercial College and was proficient in mathematics and literature. She had a remarkable memory, and followed her husband's tradition as a generous contributor to various yeshivas and charitable organizations, had many friends and was liked by all who knew her. She worked in the N.Y. Life Insurance Co. as an actuary and secretary for several years. She worked as a secretary and office manager at several hotels in the Catskills, and in 1944 settled in Lakewood and continued to do the same in the work in numerous hotels there. Rose had a flair for humor and enjoyed entertaining at the Senior Citizen Centers, was a secretary for the Golden Ring Choral Group and the Jewish Social Club. She was a lover of animals and was a member of The New England Anti-Vivisection Society. As her eyesight started failing in her later years, she became affiliated with the N.J. Commission for the Blind. Her beloved husband, Meyer, died in 1996. Rose was survived by her many good friends of Bikur Cholim and elsewhere. Arrangements by Belkoff-Goldstein Funeral Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Bikur Cholim of Lakewood. SOLOMON.Mr. Seymour "Sy" Solomon, longtime resident of the Four Seasons in Lakewood, died June 1, 2009. He was 76. Born in the Bronx, Sy graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, and served in the Navy 1952-1956. During the Korean War Conflict, he was aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and served as radar man third class at Boca Chica, Naval Air Station at Key West, Fla. He worked for Good Deal Supermarkets as training director after managing several stores. He owned the Kearny Yacht Club, managed both the Rutgers University Coop Bookstore and the Middlesex County College Bookstore, where he was also the director of retail services for 28 years. He was the director of the MCC Foundation, president of the Middle Atlantic College Stores, 1984, Outstanding Manager of the Year, 1988, first president of the Four Seasons Community Association, and first president of United Adult Communities. He was predeceased by his mother, Tillie, and his father, Benjamin L. Sy will be sorely missed by all his loving friends and family. Mr. Solomon is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Linda Philipps Solomon; children, Sharon Nasstrom and her husband John, David Solomon and his wife Amy, and Leslie Nixon; granddaughters, Samantha and Blaire Nasstrom, Danielle and Carly Solomon, and Apryl Nixon; and sisters, Hilda Solomon, Naomi Gulant, and Ethel Jacobs.
