Dr. Kenneth and Ann Nahum, the 2006-2007 Honorees, have been part of the Solomon Schechter Family for
almost 15 years. Their contributions have helped shape Solomon Schechter Day School in many ways, and have included
financial support, class visits by Dr. Nahum, coaching of the basketball team by Ann Nahum, and much more. Carol Werthan, the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, began her exemplary history of
dedicated service to the school in 2001 with her husband, Tom, and their two children, Melanie and Joseph. Carol is
the model of the dedicated and selfless volunteer. She has co-chaired the Book Fair, served as class parent, and
chaired the Purim Carnival and the Annual Scholarship Dinner Dance. In 2005, Carol took on the presidency of the
Parent-Teacher Association and currently serves as the PTO representative to the Board of Trustees. Karen Hodes, recipient of the Meritorious Award, began her association with Solomon Schechter Day
School in 1998, when she and husband Art enrolled their son Matthew in Kindergarten. Karen has worked on many
fundraisers including the Goods and Services Auction, the Art Auction, and the PTO raffle. She has been involved in
organizing the school store and for the past several years, Karen has graciously hosted the Shomrei Schechter
Annual Campaign Reception at Branches, her catering facility in Long Branch. In conjunction with the annual Scholarship Journal Dinner Dance, Solomon Schechter Day School publishes a Scholarship Ad Journal, the school's major fundraising project of the year. The funds raised through the Journal are used to provide scholarships for children who might not otherwise be able to benefit from the outstanding secular and Jewish education offered at Solomon Schechter Day School. Solomon Schechter Day School is recognized in the community for its excellent academic program as well as its
nurturing and supportive environment. To learn more about our Nursery through Grade 8 school programs,

Solomon Schechter hosts golf classic Even after its postponement last month due to inclement weather, nearly 70 golfers still turned out on June 25 for the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County Third Annual Golf Classic held at Battleground Country Club, Manalapan. The event, considered to be one of the school's biggest yearly fundraisers, was originally slated for June 4. Linda Glickstein, the school's marketing director, felt that event was a success. "It really is generally a day of camaraderie, and it's also a nice way for us to get the school's name out there, as well as to help us bring money into the school," Glickstein said. Event chairman Paul Fried was initially nervous about the weather, which started out a bit overcast. In the end, though, he was happy to see the vast number of participants in the event, which was supposed to be 74. "Each year that we've had the event, it's pretty much been the same number of people," Fried explained. "The main objective of the day was to raise money for the school, and we definitely accomplished that. We had a nice turnout this year, and my hope for years to come is that this event can grow more and more. It's nice to see that people want to us out and raise funds." Fried also mentioned that, besides last week's golf outing, the other big event that the school hosts is a dinner dance. He said he'd like to see the golf event become as popular. "If more people can get involved in our golf outing, that'd be great," Fried said. "It's something that benefits
the school and brings not only money, but notoriety as well." ~Dan Newman ![]()
