ABRAMOWITZ. Mrs. Sarah Abramowitz of Scotch Plains died June 5, 2009 in the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Scotch Plains. She was 92. Born in Newark, Mrs. Abramowitz lived in Union before moving to Scoth Plains 15 years ago. She was a bookkeeper and office manager for Slick Shine, Newark, for many years, retiring 27 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Hyman. Mrs. Abramowitz is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Andy; and her grandchildren, Jesse and Ross. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. ARESTY. Mr. Jerome Joseph Aresty died June 5, 2009. He was 79. Born on Aug. 23, 1929 in Rochester, N.Y., to Emma Nahmias Aresty and Joseph Aresty, Jerome was the youngest of nine children, nicknamed "the Babe". He married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine Kabakoff, in 1952. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. He graduated from Rutgers College in 1951 and was an active and very supportive alumnus. He and Lorraine established merit-based scholarship programs, the Aresty Amphitheater at Rutgers Stadium, and a visiting scholars program. In 2004, the Aresty Research Center was established at Rutgers University to support and mentor students conducting undergraduate research. From 1951 to 1953 Jerome served in the Air Force as a first lieutenant, stationed in New York, Massachusetts, and Alaska. He moved to Morristown in 1964 to join his brother, Joseph, in a ladies' clothing manufacturing business. Over a 30-year career, Jerome, with his brothers and partners Joseph and Gerald, grew the business into a major sportswear firm, Alfred Dunner, Inc. Jerome and Lorraine became residents of Boca Raton, Fla., in 2004, where he pursued his passion for golf. They continued to spend their summers in Morristown. Jerome will be remembered for his major support of Jewish charities, Morristown Memorial Hospital, Rutgers University, and many others. Jerome is survived by his wife, Lorraine; daughter, Karen Kustel of Mill Valley, Calif.; son, James of Aspen, Colo.; four grandsons; brothers, Maurice and Joseph; sister, Ann; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hilda Hess Baron died June 10, 2009 at home. She was 95. Born on Sept. 13, 1913 in Plainfield, Hilda was the daughter of Isaac and Jennie Hess. She grew up in Plainfield and North Plainfield, graduating from North Plainfield High School in 1931. She lived in Linden, North Plainfield, and Plainfield before moving to Monroe 30 years ago. Two years ago, she moved to Watchung. She worked as a receptionist and nurse assistant in her husband's medical office. She loved to bake, especially yeast buns, and also made several delicious soups. She enjoyed golf, canasta, and mah jongg, and volunteered at Deborah Hospital and the Jewish Family Service. She was an avid sports fan. On her 95th birthday she celebrated the occasion with more than 100 relatives and friends who gathered from 11 states and Paris. Her husband, Dr. Leo E., died in 1990. Her son, Steven D., died in 2003. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Sylvia Cohen, Sophie Sklarew, Evelyn Tretsky, Milton and Herbert Hess. Mrs. Baron is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and James Shrager of Somerset and Susan and Arthur Lippitt of Watchung, with whom she resided; grandchildren, Jennifer Shrager and husband Eli Lourie, Andrew Lippitt, Jeffrey Shrager, Matthew Lippitt and wife Samantha, Lauren Lippitt, Meredith Lee and husband David and Jessica Baron; great-grandchildren, Jonah and Celia Lourie, Jordyn, Max and Jaime Lippitt; brother and sisters-in-law, Frederick and Barbara Hess of Florida, and Charlotte Hess of Monroe; several nieces, nephews; and caregiver and special friend, Hanna. DIAMOND.Mr. Bernard Diamond died June 5, 2009. He was 79. Born in New York City, Mr. Diamond lived in Bayonne and Highland Park before moving to The Ponds at Monroe. He was in the building business for his entire career. He and his wife, Marian, were lifetime members of the Highland Park Conservative Temple, where he had served on the board of trustees. He also served on The Ponds B'nai B'rith board of trustees and was a member of Congregation Concordia. He was predeceased by his wife, Marian. Mr. Diamond is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Paula of The Ponds; daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Mitchell Frumkin of Kendall Park and their children, Lauren, Seth, and Adam; and daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Donald Lakin of Short Hills and their children, Samantha and Zachary. Memorial donations may be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County or a charity of one's choice. FUCHS. Mr. Marvin Fuchs died June 3, 2009, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. He was 84. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Fuchs lived in East Brunswick before moving to Marlboro 15 years ago. He fought for his country in the Navy, the Seabees, during World War II, earning the Purple Heart twice. He was an investigator for the N.J. Research Bureau in East Orange for 35 years before retiring. He was a member of the Marlboro Jewish Center Congregation Ohev Shalom, Marlboro. His son, Scott, died in 2008. Mr. Fuchs is survived by his wife of 57 years, Florence; daughter, Andrea Fuchs of East Brunswick; daughter-in-law, Tricia Fuchs of Cary, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Marti of Middletown; brother, Morton of Atlanta; sisters-in-law, Carol Katz, Barbara Muller, and Sandra Muller; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Irving Korngut died peacefully June 1, 2009, at University Medical Center at Princeton. He was 86. Born in South River, Mr. Korngut lived in Cranford with his family for 35 years. He graduated from Weequahic High School in 1941 and attended both Rutgers and Seton Hall Universities. He was employed as an insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Company for 35 years. He received numerous companywide President's Citations and other awards for sales achievements during his career, while serving many residents of Union County. He was consistently one of the top 100 producing Prudential agents nationwide and served as vice president of the Union County Life Underwriters Association. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 with the rest of his four brothers to serve his country honorably. He was stationed in Europe during World War II and received an honorable discharge. His wife, Lila, died in 2004. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Milton, Julian, Emanuel and Archie; and sister, Ruth Price. Mr. Korngut is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Lew and Michelle of Lawrenceville, and Hank and Joan of Mill Valley, Calif.; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Gregory, Alexandra, and Elise. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Mr. Rendsburg -- a Holocaust survivor -- emigrated to the United States in 1946, settling in Baltimore. He lived there until moving to N.J. in 1964. He lived in Edison since 1980. He was a liquor salesman for Seagram's Inc. 1947-1980. From 1980 until retiring in 2000, he was a salesman for Majestic Wines and Spirits in Pennsauken. Mr. Rendsburg is survived by his beloved wife, Irene (Schneemann); sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Beth of Highland Park; Ron and Susan of New Durham, N.C.; and three grandchildren. ROSEN. Mr. Harold L. Rosen died June 15, 2009, at St. Barnabas Medical Center. He was 80. Mr. Rosen owned Rosen Decorators of Jersey City, a family business begun by his parents. A Korean War Army veteran, he was a member of the Jewish War Veterans of America. He was also an accomplished artist and had a passion for carpentry. He was predeceased by his wife, Toby. Mr. Rosen is survived by his longtime companion, Lorry Warhoftig; son and daughter-in-law, Irwin and Sharen of Jersey City; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy Rosen and Alan Porwich of North Brunswick; siblings, Herman and Sandra Rosen of Boston, and Elsie and Norman Stelzer of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; sister-in-law, Charlotte Markovits of Port Jervis, N.Y.; grandchildren, Lindsay and Christopher Aliano and Dorie and Samantha Porwich; and great-grandchild, Casey Aliano. Interment at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Fairview. Arrangements by Gutterman Bros., Bayonne. SEGAL. Mrs. Ruby Segal died June 6, 2009 at Homeland Center, Harrisburg, Pa. She was 87. Born in Long Island City to Harry and Beatrice (Laxer) Blum, Mrs. Segal graduated from New York University and received her master's degree from Jersey City State University. She retired from Jersey City State University as an academic advisor. She was a member of Temple Emanuel in Bayonne, a life member of the Temple Emanuel Sisterhood, a life member of Hadassah, and a member of the Bayonne Jewish Community Center, AARP, and the alumni association of New York University. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack David Segal. Mrs. Segal is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sandy and Mary K. of Harrisburg, and grandsons Jeff and Ben. Born in Brooklyn, Sandi lived in Somerset for many years. She was an administrator for the Middlesex County College Foundation. She was a very special person with an "electric" personality who experienced many exciting challenges in life and lived every day with "gusto." She enjoyed golf, tennis and music. Her bubbly personality and sharp sense of humor will be missed. Mrs. Sulam is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald; sons, Marc and Glen; daughter-in-law, Debra; and grandsons, Luke, Jack, and William. Entombment at Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus. VERBEL.Mrs. Dorothy Verbel (Kalmanowitz) died June 2, 2009. Mrs. Verbel was an elementary school teacher and remedial reading specialist for the Woodbridge board of education for more than 25 years. She was also a member of the NEA, NJEA, Sisterhood president of the former Temple Beth Shalom of Iselin, Project Literacy volunteer, Metuchen Book Club, Plainfield Hiking Club, Plainfield Photography Club, YMHA Senior Citizens Group of New Brunswick and Temple Emanu El of Edison. Mrs. Verbel is survived by her husband, George; children, Carol Bernes, Bernard Cohen, Annyse Gross (Mark), Debbie Verbel (Linda) and Nan Verbel; and grandchildren, Ari and John. WINTER.Mr. Seymour Winter died June 1, 2009 at Delray Medical Center, Delray Beach, Fla. He was 83. Born in Irvington to Jacob and Sadie Winter on Dec. 21, 1925, Mr. Winter always answered to his name as "Winter all year round". He lived in Hillside and Union, where he was a member of Temple Israel and B'nai B'rith (Union) before moving to Greenbriar in Marlboro, 17 years ago. He was also a resident of Boynton Beach. He was a Korean War Army veteran and told many stories about being stationed in the cold during that tour. He graduated from Upsala College, Newark, where he majored in chemistry. He worked for Exxon Research Center in Linden as a chemist and received accolades for his creative ideas from the company. He retired in 1985 after 32 years of service. After retiring, he loved playing shuffleboard and was the recipient of six medals for this sport in the Senior Olympics. He also enjoyed the wonderful hobby of working as a supervisor and hiring ushers for the shows produced at Symphony Hall (Mosque Theatre), Newark. Mr. Winter is survived by his loving wife, Joan (Lesnik); devoted children, Mark of Weston, Fla. and Gail (Jeffrey) Lieberman of Wellington, Fla.; and five adored grandchildren.
