APPEL. Mrs. Pauline ("Pearl") Rhoda Appel died June 11, 2008. She was 85.
Born and raised in the Forest Hills area of Queens, Mrs. Appel married Sidney and raised her family in Queens, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Newark.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Donna of DeBary, Fla., Neal and Beth of Toms River, and Clifford and Maryanne of Winterville, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Frances Appel and Lucille Silber, both of Tamarac, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildrenm two of whom will be born this fall. Interment at Menorah Gardens, Southwest Ranches, Fla., where she will be laid to rest next to her devoted husband of 40 years.
BLOOM. Dr. Charles "Sumner" Bloom died June 2, 2008, at home. He was 86.
Born in Boston, Dr. Bloom graduated from the New England College of Optometry. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He practiced optometry in Madison for more than 40 years, retiring in 1995 to Toms River. His many accomplishments included a fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry, past treasurer of the New Jersey Optometric Association, past president of the New Jersey State Board of Optometric Examiners, past president of the Madison Kiwanis Club and past chairman of the Madison-Chatham Chapter of the American Red Cross. He received the Dr. E.C. Nurock Award presented by the New Jersey Optometric Association as its highest honor to an optometrist. True to his birthplace, he remained a loyal Red Sox fan. He enjoyed being a member of the Lake Ridge Men's Club and playing cards.
Dr. Bloom is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Eva; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Bennett and Zena of Hainesport; grandchildren, Stefanie, Benjamin, Alec, and Brent; step-grandchildren, Abby and Ayden; and many nieces and nephews. Interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. Arrangements by Belkoff-Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Lakewood. BODENSTEIN. Mrs. Anna Kerzner Bodenstein died June 17, 2008, at the Medical Center at Princeton. She was 89.
Born in Orange, Mrs. Bodenstein lived in West Orange for 40 years before moving to Monroe 14 years ago. Her husband, Jerome Irwin, died in 2003.
Mrs. Bodenstein is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Harriet and Sheldon Golub of East Brunswick, Joyce of New York City, and Barbara and Tom Wallack of Flanders; grandchildren, Andrew Golub and his wife Eden, Jill Golub and David Wallack; and great-grandchildren, Spencer, Bailey and Mitchell Golub. GAINES. Mrs. Elaine Gaines died May 30, 2008, at Hollywood Memorial South in Hollywood, Fla. She was 92.
Born in Mountaindale, N.Y., Mrs. Gaines lived in Lakewood most of her life, retiring to Florida in 1973. She was raised in a hotel family and consequently became a gracious hostess. In old time Lakewood, it was not uncommon to see patients waiting to be seen by her husband sharing coffee and cake in her kitchen and living room. She graduated from Lakewood High School. An avid golfer, she was a long time member of the Lakewood Country Club. She was also civic minded, spending time as a Gray Lady at Paul Kimball Hospital. She was a former member of the Ocean County Jewish Federation, Lakewood Hadassah, Congregation Sons of Israel, and Beth Am Shalom. Above all, she was devoted to both her immediate and extended families. Her loving husband, Dr. Aaron Gaines, died in 1972.
Mrs. Gaines is survived by her children, Dr. Richard Gaines and his wife Ginny of Brick, and Susan Dalin and her companion, Harvey Stoller of Boca Raton, Fla.; grandchildren, Jill Ben David and her husband Aharon, Steven Dalin and his partner, John Natalie, Dr. Greg Dalin and his wife Lori, Aaron Dalin, Jennifer Dagner, Ali Ganezer and her husband Daniel, and Brent Gaines; and great-grandchildren, Chris, Liron, Dylan, Shaia, Alyssa, and Jana. HOFFMAN. Mr. Milton S. Hoffman died June 4, 2008, at Delray Hospital, Delray Beach, Fla. He was 84.
Born in Manhattan, Mr. Hoffman lived in Brooklyn before moving to Monroe in 1987. He spent winters at his home in Delray Beach, Fla. He was president of Victor Kellering Plastic Container Corp., a family-owned business in Brooklyn, before retiring in 1986. An Army veteran of World War II, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and received two bronze stars, among other awards.
Mr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of 60 years, Selma Hodas Hoffman; sons and daughters-in-law, Victor J. and Lynne of Westborough, Mass., Steven L. and Sally of Newton, Mass., and Sydney J. and Stacy Dill of Round Rock, Texas; and grandchildren, Anne, Laura, Faith, Theadora, Garrett and Samuel. KATZELNICK. Mrs. Rosalyn Katzelnick died June 18, 2008, at home. She was 74.
Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Katzelnick lived in Edison for 26 years before moving to Monroe 16 years ago. She was the former owner of Barricini Candy, New Brunswick.
Mrs. Katzelnick is survived by her husband of 53 years, Darwin; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Marla of Morganville, Jeff and Jill of Hillsborough, and Mark and Jill of Melville, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law, Sophia and Paul Yersin of Freehold; sister, Francine Ackerman of Flushing, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Scott, Caitlyn, Genna, Corey, Calli, Raquel, Chad, Jake and Jared. LEVINE. Mrs. Edith Levine died May 22, 2008, at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. She was 92.
Born in Manhattan, Edith raised her children in Brooklyn. She lived in Lakewood for many years before settling in Toms River a year ago. She was a member of Congregation Dov "v" Schmuel, Lakewood. Her greatest joy was her family, including her many nephews and nieces.
Edith is survived by her beloved husband of 71 years, Sidney; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Joanne of Manchester; daughter and son-in-law, Rosalie and Murry Tornopsky of Jackson; grandchildren, Howard Tornopsky and his wife Jill, Neal Tornopsky and his wife Jennifer, Heather Levine and her husband Drew Arnold, and Cheryl Parsons and her husband Andrew; and eight great-grandchildren. MANDELBAUM. Mrs. Dolores Mandelbaum died May 19, 2008, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick. She was 79.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Mandelbaum lived in Paramus for 36 years before moving to Lakewood 11 years ago. She graduated from Weequahic High School, Newark. After her graduation, she was an executive secretary for the Prudential Insurance Co., Newark, for nine years before joining Sears, Roebuck & Co. as a supervisor in the Catalogue Division, working there for 15 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Deborah of Lakewood.
Her beloved husband, Leonard, died in March 2008; her dear brother, Ronald Rubin, died in 1979.
Mrs. Mandelbaum is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Marc and Phyllis of Marlboro, and Eric and Jacqueline of Warren; and four adored grandchildren. POLLACK. Mr. Morton Pollack of Tinton Falls died May 15, 2008, at his home. He was 81.
Born in Newark, Mr. Pollack lived in Ocean for 22 years before moving to Tinton Falls 14 years ago. He was a self-employed insurance agent for 40 years in central New Jersey before retiring. After his retirement, he became a product demonstrator for Jade Promotions working throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties. He was a World War II Army veteran.
Morty is survived by his wife, Lenore; daughters and son-in-law, Lani Wisch, and Lisi and Herb Himsel of Toms River; grandchildren, Dani and Noah of Litchfield, Conn.; and sister, Florence Wolfe of Old Lyme, Conn. RICHMOND. Mr. David I. Richmond died Sunday, May 18, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick. He was 85.
Born in Boston, David lived in Massapequa, Long Island and Howell before settling in Brick 13 years ago. He attended Temple Beth Or, Brick. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and worked in the garment industry. He was always devoted to his work and his family and was very proud of his military service.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sylvia; son, Leslie and his wife Deborah of Manalapan; daughter, Lynne Richmond and her companion Charles Webster of Brick; and grandchildren, Matthew, Kelley, Kimberly, Lauren, Megan, and Robert. RODALE Mrs. Emily Rodale died May 30, 2008, at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. She was 81.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Rodale lived in West Orange for 35 years before moving to Lakewood 13 years ago. Her husband, Irvin Rodale, died in 2004.
Mrs. Rodale is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Theresa Rodale of Manalapan; sister, Sylvia Rosenbaum of Lakewood; and granddaughter, Jacqueline. Interment at Beth Israel Mausoleum, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan.
SCHREIBER Mrs. Selma Platt Schreiber died June 8, 2008. She was 92.
Born in Elizabeth in 1916 to George and Dora Platt, Mrs. Schreiber was the last survivor of seven brothers and one sister. Selma was the widow of Max Schreiber, to whom she was married for 63 years. Together they operated Mac and Sonny's Confectionary in Elizabeth, working seven days a week for 35 years. Following the sale of their business in 1978, she began a rewarding career working in the Graduate Library of Kean University for many years. She was an active member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Elmora Hebrew Center and Women's American Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (ORT) in Elizabeth. People who knew Selma knew her as a strong-willed personality with a heart of gold. She never forgot anyone's birthday or anniversary amongst her huge family and many friends. Her son, George, died in 2006.
Mrs. Schreiber is survived by her children, Maureen Bernstein and Dr. Jerald Schreiber; son-in-law, Sam Bernstein; daughters-in-law, Judith Ackerman and Tina Ryman Schreiber; granddaughters, Ariella Schreiber and Melissa Bell; great-grandchildren, Bailey Bell and Alexandria Bell; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marilyn and Armand Cicciu, and Lucille and Herman "Nook" Schreiber; and many loving nieces and nephews. SCHWARTZ. Mrs. Estelle Alberta Bernheim Schwartz died May 27, 2008, at Chapin Hill Nursing Home in Red Bank. She was 89.
Mrs. Schwartz was the daughter of Ida Stern Weiss Bernheim and William Bernheim of E. Bernheim and Sons Funeral Home, Newark, currently Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. She was a descendant of Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, who was the leading exponent of Reform Judaism in America and founder of Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, in 1875. Estelle is also a descendant of Adolph Ochs, owner of "The New York Times" in 1896. As a youth, she sung with the Newark Opera Company and was also active in the drama group at the YMHA, High Street, Newark, in which Dory Sharey was a colleague. She was in the first graduating class of Arts High School, Newark. She worked outside the home in order to provide culturally enriching activities, music, dance, and religious instruction for her children. Her artistic dreams were realized through her daughter, Judith Bernheim Peckmore, a flautist, who is a principal with the Gramercy Arts Trio, a chamber music ensemble, which performs throughout the tri-state area.
The love of her life, Harold Schwartz, predeceased her in 1971. She leaves behind Barbara Diane Marsh, first born, and beloved child who gave Estelle three wonderful grandchildren, William, Harold and Aimee Marsh. She also was blessed to have a wonderful son-in-law, Douglas Peckmore. Dr. Leslie Schlessinger, Estelle's nephew, ministered to her from his heart throughout her passage to eternal life. Also left to mourn are her dear sister, Lorraine Bernheim, and many nieces and nephews.
