THE JEWISH STATE March 5, 2010 GRAIFER. Mr. Kalmon Graifer died Feb. 27, 2010, at the Delaire Nursing and Convalescent Center, Linden. He was 100. Born in Russia, Mr. Graifer lived in Clark before moving to Linden in 2006. He was the owner and operator of Maple Dairy, Newark, for 25 years. He was then employed by Tabatchnick's in Union at the Millburn Mall until retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Masons, the Eagles, and B'nai B'rith. He was predeceased by his wife, Esther (nee Kendler). Mr. Graifer is survived by his daughter, Beverly Kessler; son, Martin Graifer; and grandchildren, Jesse Margolis and Leah Moon. Interment at Beth David Cemetery, Kenilworth. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. HALPERN. Mr. Joseph Halpern died peacefully Feb. 22, 2010. He was 93. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Mr. Halpern was a survivor of a forced labor camp in Hungary. One of the few remaining eyewitnesses to the Holocaust, he was the last to see his rescuer, Raoul Wallenberg, prior to Mr. Wallenberg's "disappearance" in the Russian gulag. He emigrated to the U.S. with his wife and 1-year-old son. As a resident of New Providence, he was a chemist for Berkeley Chemical Corp. in Berkeley Heights. He was an inventor who held more than 30 patents, a Red Cross contributor who assisted displaced Hungarians emigrating to the U.S. after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, a founding member of Temple Sinai in Summit, and an avid tennis player until the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 51 years, Ilona. Mr. Halpern is survived by his children, Leslie Halpern of Herndon, Va., and Susan Nochumson of Pensacola, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Interment at Beth Israel Memorial Cemetery, Woodbridge. MENDELSON. Mrs. Natalie Mendelson died Feb. 24, 2010, at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 81. Born in the Bronx, Mr. Mendelson lived there until moving to South Brunswick 50 years ago. Prior to retiring, she worked as an administrative assistant to the chairman of anesthesiology at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. Her husband, Leonard, died in 2005. Her son, Arthur, died in 1993. Mrs. Mendelson is survived by her son, Stuart, of South Brunswick. Interment at Washington Cemetery, South Brunswick. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. PADNIS. Mr. Edward Padnis died Feb. 22, 2010, at home. He was 70. Born in New York City, Mr. Padnis lived in Brooklyn before moving to Morganville 41 years ago. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from New York University. He was a high school economics teacher in New York City for 30 years before retiring in 1995. Afterwards, he was an adjunct professor at Middlesex County College and Brookdale Community College. He was a founding member of Marlboro Jewish Center. Mr. Padnis is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia (nee Morgenbesser); sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Deena of Parkland, Fla., and Michael of New York City; sister, Ilene Kletzchmar of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan. ROBERTS. Mrs. Ruth Roberts (nee Eisenberg) died Feb. 23, 2010, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rahway. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Roberts lived in Hillside most of her life before moving to Watchung in 2009. She was the executive secretary for Temple Shomrei Torah of Hillside for many years before retiring. She was a life member of Hadassah, holding many offices and receiving many awards. She was also a member of the National Council of Jewish Women, the YM-YWHA of Union County and Congregation Shomrei Torah Ohel Yosef Yitzchok of Hillside. She was a loving and caring person who took great pride in her family and their accomplishments. Her generosity and capacity to enjoy life was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo. Mrs. Roberts is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Allan Knoller, and Carole and Nathan Zapolsky; granddaughters and their husbands, Cheryl and William Bader, Marci and Dr. Paul Peller, and Michelle Knoller; and great-grandchildren, Evan, Lauren, Jeremy, and Alison. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
