The Jewish community of Somerset County is going swinging into summer with the Bridgewater JCC's annual golf outing June 15. The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC will host its eighth annual golf outing at the Raritan Valley Country Club, Bridgewater. All of the proceeds from the event go to the JCC Scholarship Fund, which goes to children in the nursery school and camp, seniors in the community, and families in need of financial assistance. "We're very excited about the upcoming outing," Susan Ferbank, executive director of the JCC, said. In the past, the outing has had a great turnout, where usually about 90 to 100 golfers participate, Ferbank said. The outing usually takes place in May, but in hopes of attracting more people because of the warmer weather in June a decision was made to change the date this year. The scholarship fund is ongoing throughout the year, but the golf outing is always a major source of money for the fund, she said. "For the golf outing, we're hoping to raise $35,000," she said. The outing began eight years ago, when the executive director and the board -- of whom many were golfers -- thought it would be a successful fun event to start an annual golf outing. "It's one of our major fundraisers," Ferbank said. "People really enjoy it." JCC President Peter Horowitz said he has participated in the outing for the past five or six years. Although he considers himself a mediocre golfer, he has a terrific time at the outing each year. "It's a chance to play on a nice golf course, support the JCC, and a nice day to have with friends," Horowitz said. "Even if you are not good, you can still have a good time." The two co-chairs for the event are Abby Ages and Josh Leibner. Leibner, who was on the committee that planned the event for the past few years and has participated as well, is co-chairing the outing for the first time. He has been an active member in the JCC for the past six years and his son has taken part in activities there as well. "It's (the JCC) been a big part of my life," Leibner said. "I like to be able to give back." The fee for a single golfer is $300, which includes 18 holes of golf, lunch, cocktail reception, dinner and an awards ceremony. The foursome fee is $1,200. Single golfers are welcome; the JCC will create foursomes. Registration on June 15 begins at 10:30 a.m., and it features contests including Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, Hole-in-One, and Closest to the Line. PNC Bank is the title sponsor of the outing. Hole-in-one prizes are provided by Flemington Car & Truck Company and Flemington Furs. The day will also feature a sports and memorabilia auction.
