Thoughts on the U.S. election to the U.N. Human Rights Council

American Jewish Committee congratulates the United States on its election to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, and looks forward to a sustained American-led effort to reform this important, yet flawed, institution. Flawed because nations with horrid human rights records also sit on the council and routinely ignore major humanitarian crises around the world in favor of repeated broadsides against only one country, Israel.

America must not simply become a lonely voice of dissent in a chamber crowded with the world's tyrants. It must take on the responsibility of focusing the council on the very real human rights abuses that plague our world.

Tolerance and understanding needed

I would like to address Rabbi Rosenberg's problem. We live in America, where we are free to live our lives as we wish as long as it does not harm anyone. People have a right to ride a car when they wish. They do not tell us not to drive a car on Sundays.

This is why the Jewish community is so broken up -- someone's attitude that their way is the only way. But we are all human beings and need to respect each other, as it is said in the Torah. If it disturbs anyone, they can take a walk elsewhere or close their windows. I cannot stop anyone from doing or telling anyone else how to live. Tolerance and understanding are needed by all.
