ABELWITZ. Mrs. Frances Abelowitz (nee Liebowitz) of Somerset died May 9, 2008, in the Regency Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Somerset. She was 95.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Abelowitz lived in Union and Manchester before moving to Somerset three years ago. She was a secretary at Temple Sinai in Hillside for 15 years, retiring in 1973. A life member of Hadassah of Hillside and Union, she was also the founder of the Manchester chapter. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack; daughter, Barbara Eisler; and sister, Ruth Levinson.

Mrs. Abelowitz  is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Marc Geller; grandchildren, Judith, Barry, Alan, Joshua and Zachary; and great-grandchildren, Sara, Benjamin and Emma. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.

 

BERMAN. Mrs. Sylvia Berman of Hazlet died May 2, 2008, at Bayshore Community Hospital. She was 97 years old.

Born in Lodz, Poland, Mrs. Berman came to New York City in 1925. She lived in Brooklyn and Queens before moving to Hazlet in 2002. She was a homemaker for many years before working for Macy's New York as a marker. She retired in 1983. Her husband, Isidore, died at the end of 1998. They were married for almost 62 years. She is also predeceased by her sisters, Anna Klein and Dorothy Lewak.

Mrs. Berman is survived by her daughters and son-in-law Natalie Gerson of Renton, Wash., and Barbara and Mark Leveene of Aberdeen; grandchildren, Melanie Kwong, Jacqueline Cooper, Philip Gerson, Suzanne Hughson, Stephanie Leveene, and Susan Leveene; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Jennifer Kwong, Isabel and Lilly Cooper, and Alexandra and Richard Hughson. GELLER. Mrs. Carla Geller died May 14, 2008, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York City. She was 73.

Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Geller lived there most of her life before moving to Monroe 10 years ago. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a master of science in 1980. She was a special education teacher at PS 272 in Brooklyn for 18 years, retiring in 1996. She served for three years as president of Alissa Chapter of Hadassah, Greenbriar, Monroe, and continued to serve as vice president of fundraising.

Mrs. Geller is survived by her husband, Irving; daughter, Elizabeth of New York City; and son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Karen of Manalapan. GOLDBERG. Mrs. Barbie Goldberg died May 15, 2008, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, New York City. She was 43.

Born in Rahway, Mrs. Goldberg lived in Colonia and Boston, Mass., before moving to Manalapan eight years ago. She graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and then received her M.B.A. from Boston University. She was a certified master hair colorist and was the proprietor of the Color Studio Boutique Hair Salon in Wellesley, Mass. She was a member of Temple Beth Shalom in Manalapan. She was predeceased by her father, Norman Becker.

Mrs. Goldberg is survived by her husband Michael; mother, Edith Becker; children, Noah, Kaela and Talia; sisters, Florie Gold and Alison Hausler; and 11 nieces and nephews. KAPLAN. Mrs. Beryl Kaplan died April 29, 2008, at Mt. Sinai Hospital, in New York City. She was 63.

Born in the Bronx and raised in Forest Hills, N.Y., Mrs. Kaplan lived in Manalapan for the past 37 years.

Mrs. Kaplan is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Bob; sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell and Kimberly of Manalapan, and Eric and Lisa of Marlboro; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Alan Sugarman of Marlboro; and grandchildren, Anna, Matthew, and Rebecca. LEBOWITZ. Mr. Sidney Lebowitz of Somerset, formerly of Lakewood, died May 7, 2008, at Regency Heritage, Somerset. He was 97.

Born in New York City, Mr. Lebowitz lived many years in New England. Upon his retirement, he moved back to New Jersey, and lived in Brick and Lakewood before moving to Somerset in 2000. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for many years. He was a past member of B'nai Brith and Congregation Beth Ohr, Brick. His wife, Ida Friedman Lebowitz, whom he married in 1936, died in 2000.

Mr. Lebowitz is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Debbie of Edison, and Marc and Susan of Cedar Knolls; grandchildren, Jeffrey and his wife Jessica, Chad, Jill, and Beth; and two great-grandsons. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Edison.

 

LESLIE. Mr. Irwin Leslie died May 10, 2008, at home. He was 84.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Leslie lived in the Bronx for most of his life, moving to Monroe 16 years ago. He was a salesman in New York City for 20 years before retiring. He was a World War II Navy pilot and one of the leaders of the Rossmoor Jewish Congregation, Monroe. He was predeceased by his brother, Herbert, and sister, Gladys Stacy.

Mr. Leslie is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Joyce of Highland Park; sister, Elaine Sherman of Jericho, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Rachel, Daliah and Adam. Entombment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick.

 

OSTRO. Mr. Ira L. Ostro died suddenly of a heart attack April 11, 2008, at his home in Montrose, Calif. He was 90.

Born in Manhattan, Mr. Ostro graduated from Richmond Hill High School, Queens, in 1933 and worked in diverse photographic jobs in New York, Florida, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. He married Mary Kline in 1942. During World War II he served as cryptographic security officer with the Army Air Force. He owned Ostro's Camera Shop in Somerville, from 1949 to 1986. He was a founder and active member of Temple Beth El, Hillsborough. He was a director of the Somerville Kiwanis Club, a trustee of the YMCA, and a president of the Somerville Adult School for Leisure Learning. He also served on the Somerville board of health, on the advisory board of the Somerville board of education, on a Boy Scout district committee, and on the county prosecutor's advisory board on economic crime. After he retired from the photography business, he worked for 10 years at the Department of Anesthesiology at Somerset Medical Center and Somerset Pain Management Center. After the death of his wife in 2000, he moved to California, where he was a volunteer at the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center from 2000 to 2007 and then at Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale, working mornings five days a week until his death.

Mr. Ostro is survived by his sons, Steven, Stuart, and Robert; grandchildren, Marguerite, Brian, Julianna, Estelle, Gilbert and Timothy; half-brother, Justin; half-sister, Renee; sister-in-law, Harriet Kline; and nieces, Judy Bari, Florence Kline, and Shirley Kline. Cremation was through the Neptune Society. Interment at Beth Israel Memorial Park in Woodbridge. A memorial service for Mr. Ostro will be held at 10:30 a.m., June, 16, at Temple Beth El, 67 Highway 206, Hillsborough. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

 

SCHILD. Mrs. Margo (Bermann) Schild died in Australia May 1, 2008. She was 90.

Born in Berlin, Mrs. Schild and her husband, Alfred, fled Germany in 1938 for Cuba, where she gave birth to their son shortly after their arrival. Margo and her family immigrated to the United States in 1940 and lived in Washington Heights, N.Y., where their daughter, Joanne, was born. Margo was a high-fashion dressmaker for many years. In 1957 she began her career in investments business and in 1986 she was the founding president of Creative Investment Concepts, a family investments firm in which she remained active into her 80s. Margo loved to travel. She met Jack Tyler on a tour in Australia and they became close companions for the past 15 years. She was a member of Congregation Anshe Emeth South River (now HPCT-CAE), and a staunch supporter of Israel and various other causes. She was the longtime president of a local NA'AMAT (originally named “Pioneer Women”) group and was honored for her many years of devoted service.

Margo is survived by Jack; her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Barbara of Old Bridge; her daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Roger; six grandchildren and their spouses; and nine great-grandchildren. Interment at Congregation Anshe Emeth Cemetery, East Brunswick. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. SCHLOSBERG. Mr. James R. Schlosberg, died May 13, 2008, in Marietta, Ga.

A prominent Newark attorney, Mr. Schlosberg was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1937 and practiced in Newark until 1984, when he moved to Georgia. He was known for his honesty, integrity and professionalism. For a time, in the 1950s, he practiced law in Middlesex Borough, where he was a municipal court judge. He was always known as a hard worker with a great sense of humor. He was a founding charter member of Temple Emanuel of Westfield and the East Brunswick Jewish Community Center. He was married for 59 years to the former Hortense M. Friedman or, as he fondly called her, his beloved Horty, until her death in 1999.

Mr. Schlosberg is survived by his son, Michael G., who practices law in Marietta, Ga.; and nephews and nieces. Interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements by H.M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel, Sandy Springs, Ga.

 

SHAK. Mrs. Charlotte Shak died May 11, 2008, at home in Scotch Plains.

Mrs. Shak was a board member of the Jewish Family Services in Elizabeth and a board member and life member of Hadassah of Westfield. She was an active member of the Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey and Temple Emanu-el in Westfield as well as its Sisterhood.

Mrs. Shak is survived by her husband, Nieson; children, Alan Pollard, Judith Crandell, Steven, Jay and Daniel Shak; and grandchildren, Shari, Jessica, Anna, Linda, Josh, Luke, Marcus, Nina, Cary, Jake, Clancy, Lindy and Austin. SIEGEL. Mrs. Doris Siegel of Green Briar II in Brick died April 22, 2008, at Community Medical Center, Toms River. She was 90. 

Born in Paterson, Doris lived in Verona and retired to Brick in 1990. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul, in 1990.

Mrs. Siegel is survived by her daughters, Elaine Schoenfeld of Lakewood and Helen Levinson of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; grandchildren, Gwen, Julie, Ketti and Tracy; and six great-grandchildren. Interment at Temple Bnai Abraham Memorial Park, Union. Arrangements by Belkoff-Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Lakewood. Memorial donations in her honor may be made to the American Cancer Society.

 

STERNBACH. Mr. Martin L. Sternbach of Green Briar II, Brick, died May 3, 2008, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was 85.

Born in Newark, Martin lived in Colonia before settling in Brick 22 years ago. He served in the Army during World War II, and worked as an electronic technician with ITT, Nutley. He was a past member of Temple Beth Am, Colonia, and a member of Temple Beth Or, Brick. He was always civic minded and proud of his heritage and belonged to B'nai B'rith, Jewish War Veterans, and the Linden Independent Benevolent Society. An animal lover, he especially loved his dog, Pepper.

Mr. Sternbach is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Sheila; daughter, Mona Sternbach of Brick; and brother, Edward of Toms River and Florida. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. TANZ. Mr. Ira Tanz died on May 17, 2008, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 79.

Born in the Bronx, Mr. Tanz lived in Flushing, Queens, before moving to the Somerset section of Franklin 43 years ago. A member of Temple Beth El in Somerset, he was a former treasurer for the congregation and also belonged to the Temple Beth El Men's Club. He enjoyed the opera and traveling. He was an animal lover and enjoyed time with his family above all else. He served our country faithfully in the United States Army during World War II. He was predeceased by his sister, Bernice Fine.

Mr. Tanz is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara of Somerset; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Linda of Bordentown, and Alan and Gina Marie of Atco; daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Tom Flynn of Robbinsville; and grandchildren, Brian, Ashley, Megan, Rebecca, Shawn and Matthew. ZIMMERMAN Mrs. Frances Zimmerman (nee Kiwkowitz) of West Orange, died May 10, 2008, in the Daughters of Israel. She was 95.

Born in Lodz, Poland, Mrs. Zimmerman immigrated to the United States in 1952. She lived in Hallandale, Fla., and Livingston before moving to West Orange two years ago. She was a head nurse at the Jewish Hospital in Sosnowitz, Poland, during World War II. Deported to Auschwitz in 1943, Frances saved the lives of her husband and sisters by bribing the guards, thus having them spared the gas chambers. Frances buried her first child by herself. After the war, she was reunited with her husband and had two children in Stuttgart, Germany, before coming to the United States in January of 1952. Frances was a member of the Ben Gurion Survivors Club of Florida and a life member of Hadassah and the Fraternal Order of Bendin Sosnowitz. She was predeceased by her husband, Sam.

Frances is survived by her daughters, Betty Meitner and Mary Barnett; grandchildren, Kara Barnett and Erika and Margot Meitner; and great-grandson, Oz Trost. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman, Livingston.
