GALERSTEIN. Mr. David H. Galerstein died April 29, 2008, at Cranbury Center, Monroe. He was 86.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Galerstein lived in New Hyde Park, N.Y., and Long Island before moving to Monroe nine years ago. Before retiring in 1984, he was principal for the New York City board of education in Brooklyn, where he worked for 30 years. He was a World War II Army veteran, and an active member of the Baker Street Irregulars.
Mr. Galerstein is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosalind Wien Galerstein; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Neal Multz of Morristown; and son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Susan of Monroe, N.Y. GREEN. Mrs. Marian Green died April 23, 2008, at Overlook Hospital, Summit. She was 74.
Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Green lived in Cranford for more than 50 years. She was the co-owner, with her husband, Joseph, and their son, Jerry, of J & M Apparel in Hazlet. She was a member of Congregation Beth O’r, Clark, and a regional treasurer for Junior Hadassah of Elizabeth.
Mrs. Green is survived by her husband, Joseph; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Janice of Morganville; daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda and Barry Korbman of Robbinsville, and Rosalyn and David Katz of Howell; and six grandchildren. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan.
KALDOR. Mr. Robert Kaldor died April 28, 2008, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 76.
Born in Szeged, Hungary, Robert lived in Queens for 14 years before moving to Marlboro 35 years ago. In 1980 he founded Kaldor Emergency Lights, Marlboro, and owned and operated the business for the past 28 years. He was a Holocaust survivor who was liberated from the Terezenstadt Concentration Camp. He joined a Zionist youth group in Budapest, Hungary, and eventually settled in Israel by traveling on the Exodus. Robert was a founder of Kibbutz Har-El in Israel near Jerusalem. He eventually settled in Marlboro in 1973. He was involved in the construction of the Marlboro Jewish Center and an active member of its congregation. Lately, he was involved in speaking to students about the Holocaust and his experiences. It was important to him to educate the youth about the Holocaust.
Mr. Kaldor is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Gabriella; daughters and sons-in-law, Ilana and Howard Gases of East Brunswick, and Shirley and Vernon Estreicher of Marlboro; and grandchildren, Aliza, Matthew, Michael and Daniel, whom he loved dearly. KARELITZ. Mr. Bernard J. Karelitz died April 22, 2008, at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home, Menlo Park. He was 97.
Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Karelitz lived in Elizabeth, Somerset and East Brunswick before moving to Menlo Park in 1995. Before retiring, he was the owner of a food stand for 15 years at the former U.S. Route 1 Flea Market in New Brunswick. He was one of the initial business owners when the market opened. Prior to that, he worked for many years in the menswear business. Bernard, who was also known as Bernie, was a member of the Masonic Temple in Elizabeth, and the Metuchen Kiwanis Club. He served in the Army during World War II in North Africa and Anzio. An avid baseball fan, he enjoyed watching various sporting events, both live and on television. He also enjoyed talking to people. His wife, Mary (Reich), died in 1984. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Helen Karelitz, Doris Franks and Alice Leviss; and his brother, David.
Mr. Karelitz is survived by his nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and stepdaughters, Diane, Janet, and Sandy. Interment at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick. KARTEN. Mrs. Ethel Zion Karten died April 26, 2008, at home. She was 85.
Born in New York City, Mrs. Karten lived in Brooklyn and Hicksville, N.Y., before moving to Old Bridge 42 years ago. She was a professional singer and voice teacher, a member of Hadassah, and a past secretary of the Lakeridge West Community Association board of trustees. She was also an adult education voice teacher for the community schools in Old Bridge, South River and Spotswood. She performed with Plays in the Park, Edison, and other New Jersey community theaters.
Mrs. Karten is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan and Kendal of Old Bridge and David and Katherine of Millbrook, N.Y.; brother, Irving Zion of Florida; sister, Ann Gover of Las Vegas; and grandchildren, Dylan, Kyla, Adina, Seth and Joshua. LITMAN. Mrs. Rita Litman, formerly of Union, a Holocaust survivor, died April 26, 2008. She was 87.
Born in Przemyshlany, Poland, in 1920, Rita survived the Holocaust in the forests of the surrounding area, having lost her entire family at age 19. After the war, she married Jacob Litman, a fellow survivor, and they arrived in New York City in 1949. The couple lived in Utica, N.Y., and Newark before settling in Union, where they lived for more than 40 years. Mrs. Litman was an active member of the Jewish Community, a lifetime member of Hadassah, an ardent Zionist and strong supporter of the State of Israel. A real estate broker since 1962, she was the owner of Rita’s Realty in Union for more than 30 years. Beginning as the exclusive broker for Farinella Construction, she established her own brokerage company with clients numbering in the thousands throughout the northern New Jersey area. She retired in 1997. She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob.
Mrs. Litman is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Joel Millman; sons and daughters-in-law, Julius and Paige and Robert and Marjorie; and grandchildren, Joshua and his wife, Aly, Daniel, Rachel, Alisha, Ethan, Abby and Matthew. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
POLLACK. Mrs. Ida Rubin Pollack died April 23, 2008, in the Reformed Church Home, Old Bridge. She was 91.
Born in St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Pollack lived in New York City and East Brunswick before moving to Old Bridge seven years ago, becoming a resident of the Reformed Church Home. In New York City, she was active in the Leukemia Association. She was most content as a homemaker, was a flawless, excellent cook, as well as an avid bingo player. Her husband, Alexander, died in 1998. She was also predeceased by her brother, Isadore Rubin, and sister, Henrietta Cohen.
Mrs. Pollack is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William and Ruth Zucker of East Brunswick; grandchildren, Lori Hadley, Ellen Gazzola, and Michael Zucker and his wife, Nadine; and great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jacqueline and Alexandra Hadley, Nicholas and Jonna Gazzola and Ari and Max Zucker. SCHWARTZ. Robert Schwartz, D.D.S., died April 26, 2008. He was 80.
Born in Newark, Dr. Schwartz lived in Hillside before moving to East Brunswick more than 30 years ago. Before retiring in July, he had a private dental practice in Rahway for more than 40 years. He was also a clinical professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry Medical School/New Jersey Dental School, Newark, for more than 20 years. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, and a Korean War Army veteran, having served as a captain. He was a member of the East Brunswick Jewish Center.
Dr. Schwartz is survived by his wife of 29 years, Carolyn Hoberman Schwartz; daughters and son-in-law, Josepha and Zachary Blocker of Wayland, Mass., and Mara Schwartz; and son, Joseph of New Haven, Conn. Sheinman. Mrs. Sylvia Sheinman died April 13, 2008. She was 77.
Born in New York City, Mrs. Sheinman lived in New Brunswick before moving to the Somerset section of Franklin in 1955. She and her husband, Irwin, were the former owners of the New York Bakery in New Brunswick, as well as the Holiday Bakery. She enjoyed playing mah jongg and enjoyed trips to Atlantic City.
Mrs. Sheinman is survived by her husband of 60 years, Irwin of Somerset; son, Larry of Somerset; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Angelo Ruotolo of Howell; and grandchildren, Christopher and Charles Sheinman and Michael and Gina Ruotolo. WEINBERG. Mrs. Martha Weinberg (nee Milstein) of Scotch Plains died April 30, 2008. She was 91.
Born in West New York, Mrs. Weinberg was the office manager for the International Fidelity Insurance Co. in Newark for more than 30 years before retiring in 1988. She was a life member of Hadassah and the Sisterhood of Temple Beth El in Jersey City. She was predeceased by her husband, Nathan.
Mrs. Weinberg is survived by her son, Dr. Jay Weinberg; daughter-in-law, Diane Weinberg; brother, Jack Milstein; and grandchildren, Dara and Eric. Interment at King Solomon Cemetery, Clifton. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels At Millburn, Union. Memorial donations may be made to Hadassah.
