Gietter. Mr. Melvin E. Gietter died Nov. 20, 2009. He was 79. Born in Newark, Mel lived in Edison for many years before moving to the Four Seasons 14 years ago. He was the proprietor of the Liquor Locker in Edison for 34 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served as a corpsman at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. He was a member of the Metuchen Golf and Country Club and after retirement was involved in many activities of the Four Seasons. Mel is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arlene (née Zimet-baum); children, Lonnie Gietter, Nancy Sawicki and her husband, Frank, and Brad Gietter and his wife, Debra; grandchildren, Shayna and Emily Gietter, Kyle and Jared Sawicki, and Erica and Alexa Gietter; and sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Charles Gelfond. Goldberg. Mr. Bernard Goldberg died Nov. 17, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 84. Born in Plainfield, Mr. Goldberg lived there for most of his life before moving to Monroe 10 years ago. He was the founding president of Bermac Pension Consulting Corporation. Before starting his own company he was a charter life underwriter who had worked for both Prudential Insurance Co. and Massachussetts Mutual Insurance Co. He was a longtime member of the Twin Brook Country Club, Watchung; a member of the N.Y. Pneumismatic Club, and a past master of the Highland Park Lodge #240, F&AM. He served with the U.S. Air Force in England during World War II. He was a longtime member of Temple Beth El, Plainfield, and was currently a member of the Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, New Brunswick. Mr. Goldberg is survived by his wife, Maxine (Smelson); son and daughter-in-law, Ira and Shari of Marlboro; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Dr. Steven Nagelberg of Cherry Hill; brothers and sister-in-law, Nathan of Monroe, and Louis and Sandy of Boca Raton, Fla.; sister, Pearl Lerner of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and grandchildren, Michael Nagelberg of New York City, Charlotte Nagelberg of Denver, and Elake Goldberg of Marlboro. She was 88. Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Green resided in Linden before moving to Monroe 30 years ago. She was a member of Deborah and Hadassah. Prior to retiring in 1965, she was a school secretary for the Linden board of education, where she worked for 20 years. Mrs. Green is survived by her husband of 69 years, Israel Green; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mark Schuman of Jackson; son and daughter-in-law Arthur and Karen of New Rochelle, N.Y.; grandchildren, David and Matthew Schuman, and Andrew and Brett Green; and great-grandchildren, Isabel, Esme, and Asher Schuman. Shelly Karsch died Nov. 20, 2009 at home. She was 70. Born in New York City, Mrs. Karsch lived in East Brunswick before moving to Monroe 14 years ago. She was involved in many community activities. Her husband, Paul, died in 1997. Mrs. Karsch is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Berenice and Barry Levine of Franklin Park, and Pamela and Trace Donahoe of Freehold; and grandchildren, April, Haile, Cory and Michael. Mrs. Charlotte Karp (née Reuben), died Nov. 18, 2009, at Stone Bridge at Montgomery Nursing Home. She was 79. Born in Newark, Mrs. Karp lived in Springfield most of her life before moving to Stone Bridge three years ago. She retired as a social worker for the state of New Jersey. She was a member of Temple Sha'arey Shalom of Springfield and was past president of its Sisterhood. She graduated from the Douglass College for Women in New Brunswick and received her master's degree from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. Her husband, Bernard, died in 2006. Mrs. Karp is survived by her sons, Jonathan of Princeton and Gregory of Seattle; brother, Jay Reuben of Convent Station; and grandchildren, Juliana, William, Brian, Anika, and Anjali. Mrs. Yetta Litwack (née Rotberg) died Nov. 19, 2009, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. She was 98. Born in Russia, Mrs. Litwack came to the United States in 1921, living in Newark, Irvington, and Clark before moving to Manalapan. She was past president of the Hadassah of Clark and chosen Mother of the Year of the New Jersey Region of Hadassah in 1998. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Julius Litwack, and her daughter, Rita Katchen. Mrs. Litwack is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and Charles Cohen of Morganville, and Nina and Neil Krouk of Monroe; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Susan Merians died Nov. 16, 2009, at Morristown Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. She was 73. Born in Brooklyn, Susan graduated in dental hygiene from Fairleigh Dickinson College in 1956. After raising her children in Edison, she moved to Princeton where she lived for the past 33 years. Susan was passionate about dancing and loved art; she was an honorary board member of the N.J. State Museum and a former board member of the Princeton Art Museum. Susan also enjoyed cooking and gardening and was a master gardener. She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney. Mrs. Merians is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Elizabeth of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Lee Berg of Edison, and Sarah and Marc Merians Silverstein of New York City; grandchildren, Max, Griffin, Drake, Matthew, Sydney, Jarod, Emily, and Wyatt; and sister, Eileen Asbel of Long Beach Island. Born in Newark, Mrs. Penn lived in West Orange and Roseland before moving to Berkeley Heights in 2008. A graduate of Weequahic High School class of 1945, Gladys was an active volunteer throughout her life. She was a past president of the Ruth Papier Chapter of the Kidney Research Foundation of New Jersey, a member of ORT, and Mended Hearts, and most dear to her, the United Order of True Sisters (UOTS), an organization that raised money for the Cardiac Home for Girls with rheumatic fever, where her own sister spent several years as a young girl. Gladys was a creative woman who loved the arts, and had a lifelong passion for opera, which began in a high school music appreciation class. Her favorite tenor was Placido Domingo. For her 80th birthday, she received a photo of him with his personal best wishes. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack; sister, Edith Misowitz; and brother, Ivan Moray. Mrs. Penn is survived by her children, Clark Elliott of Geneva, Cynthia Slavin Aufraser and Aimee Kaufman, both of Berkeley Heights, and Alice Nudelman of Upper Saddle River; grandchildren, Dana, Samantha, Benjamin, and Adam; niece and nephew, Jill and David Moray; stepchildren, Arthur, Marlene, and Lois Penn; step-grandchildren, Faith, Melissa, Nathan, Emily, Ivona, and Daria; and step-great-grandchildren, Jessica, Skyler, Michael, Zak, Hope, Brody, Lazlo, and Fergus.
