THE JEWISH STATENovember 6, 2009 BERGER. Mrs. Evelyn "Evy" Ledwitz Berger died peacefully Oct. 27, 2009, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87. Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Berger grew up in Long Branch. She was the eldest child of Bess and Abe Ledwitz and graduated from Long Branch High School in 1940. She was the beloved wife of Harry Berger of Asbury Park for 67 years. Together they lived in Ocean, where they raised their three children, Robin, Richard, and Alan. Evy and Harry enjoyed traveling around the country and the world and had a wonderful life together. Evy was an active member of Temple Beth Miriam and its Sisterhood for many years and a lifetime member of Hadassah; she was a brownie troop and cubs scout leader when her children were young. A fabulous cook, she loved to entertain family and friends, she enjoyed gardening, swimming and walking, and most of all, being with Harry, whom she called "the love of my life", her kids, and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Rita Epstein, and brothers-in-law, Walter Jonas and Bill Epstein. Mrs. Berger is survived by her husband, Harry; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Cyndi and Alan and Karen; daughter, Robin; grandchildren, Judd Berger and his wife Sangi, Meghan Berger, and Tatiana Matthews; sister and brother-in-law, Bene and Harold Seldin; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Meryl Ledwitz; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and nephews; and her best friend, Sylvia Ehrenhalt. Mr. Stuart Paul Berkowitz died Oct. 21, 2009, at St. Peter University Hospital. He was 80. Born in Newark, Stuart graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University, where he was president of Tau Delta Phi Fraternity. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was co-owner along with his brother of Berkowitz Press in Elizabeth and meanwhile served as president of the Elizabeth Rotary Club. He was appointed a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Throughout his life, Stuart proved to have vast energy for friendship and artistic endeavors. He was a board member of the Printmaking Council of New Jersey, active as a docent at the Joan Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum of Rutgers University, built furniture in his garage and was a pillar of his bereavement group, all the while remaining active in Temple Beth El of Somerset of which he as a founding member. The Printmaking Council of New Jersey has named the Stuart Berkowitz Children's Studio in his honor. In July of 2008, he suffered a severe injury to the cervical spinal cord that resulted in quadriplegia. His stoicism in the face of this adversity was awesome to behold. His wife of 49 years, Barbara Enelow Berkowitz, died in 2005. Stuart is survived by his partner, Fran Edson; brother, Ralph Berkowitz; daughters, Janet and Dr. Cynthia Berkowitz; grandsons, Isaiah and Aaron Kriegman; and countless loving family members and friends. Mrs. Dora Eisenbud died Oct. 28, 2009. She was 94. Born in New York City, Mrs. Eisenbud lived in Roselle and Linden, moving to Florida 35 years ago. She was an active member of Hadassah, Deborah League, and the former congregation of Emanu-El of Roselle. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo. Mrs. Eisenbud is survived by her sister, Bessie Harris; nieces and nephews, Susan Nakish, Barbara Stechman, Linda Gan, and Burton and Leonard Eisenbud; and sister-in-law, Lillian Elkind. Interment at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman. HOCHMAN. Ms. Betty Hochman died peacefully Oct. 22, 2009, at Daughters of Israel, West Orange. She was 92. Born in Orange, Ms. Hochman lived in South Orange for 37 years, and Leisure Village West in Manchester for 22 years. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and a community activist. She instilled a love of music and art in her family, and she had a keen and curious intellect. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Ralph. Ms. Hochman is survived by her daughters, Judith James and Carole Hochman; grandchildren, Katie, Rebecca, Matthew and Cody; and son-in-law, Peter James. Interment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. HOROWITZ. Mr. Leonard I. Horowitz died Oct. 30, 2009 at home in Monroe. He was 69. Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Horowitz lived in Marlboro for 35 years before moving to Monroe six months ago. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Nancy; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Deborah of New City, N.Y.; daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Jeffrey Kollin of Livingston, Michelle and Louis Pearlman of Colts Neck; brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Ilene Horowitz of Hollywood, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Steve Saland of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Julia, Cori, Eliza, David, Alexis, Lindsay, Gabrielle, and Cooper. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan. KATZ. Mr. Louis Katz died Oct. 26, 2009, at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He was 75. Born in Detroit, Mr. Katz lived in Morristown and Union before moving to Manchester eight years ago. He was a route driver for Pechter's Bread Company of Harrison for 30 years before retiring 10 years ago. He was an avid bowler and belonged to three bowling leagues, and also was a basketball fanatic and loved to travel. He served in the Army. Mr. Katz is survived by his wife, Anne (née Wolfe); sons, Mitchell Katz of Vineland and Stuart Katz of Naperville, Ill.; sister, Frances Salzman of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and grandchildren, Kristen, Kariann, Jennifer, Eric, Brian, and Daniel. Interment at Beth David Memorial Park, Kenilworth. Arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. MARIN. Mrs. Rosalie P. Adler Marin died Oct. 30, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 86. Born in Israel, Mrs. Marin lived in Brooklyn before moving to Monroe 26 years ago. Before retiring, she was a teacher for Ateres Yisroel in Brooklyn. She was a congregant of the Jewish Congregation of Concordia, Monroe. Her husband, Michael, died in 1992. Mrs. Marin is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Ed Bershad of Cranbury, Barbara and Howie Chernick of East Brunswick, and Sydelle and Rob Knepper of Great Neck; grand children, Dr. Joshua Bershad and his wife, Janice, Stephanie Knepper, James Knepper, and Michelle Chernick; and great-grandchildren, Alexis and Matthew Bershad. ZEIDWERG. Mr. Samuel B. Zeidwerg died Oct. 27, 2009. Born in Caldwell, Mr. Zeidwerg lived in Elizabeth, Montclair, and New York before moving to East Brunswick where he resided since 1964. He founded and owned Save-Rite Supermarket, Franklin, in 1956 until his retirement in 2002. In 1980 he was nominated by several churches in Franklin and was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award by the NAACP. He was a member of East Brunswick Jewish Center. Mr. Zeidwerg is survived by his wife, Mae (née Nisonoff); children, Dr. David, Steve and Barbara; and grandchildren, Lauren, Jordan, Allison, Rachel and Jack. Mrs. Miriam Zimmern died Oct. 28, 2009, at Tower Lodge Care Center, Wall. She was 103. Born in New York, Mrs. Zimmern lived in Flushing before moving to Long Branch in 1942. She lived in Florida for 21 years before coming back to the shore area. She and her husband were the owners of Zimmern's Tiny Tot Shop in Long Branch, and the Knit N' Needle in West End. She was a charter member of Congregation B'nai Shalom of Long Branch, a life member of Hadassah, a member of the Long Branch Council of Jewish women, Deborah Heart and Lung Center, and was active in the drama club of the JCC in Long Branch. She loved to entertain, sing, play piano, cook, bake, knit, and perform on the stage. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her husband, Benedict, died in 1984. She was also predeceased by her brother, Milton Goodman; sister Belle Wein; and son-in-law, Saul Poretzky. Mrs. Zimmern is survived by her daughter, Rhoda Poretzky of West Long Branch; grandchildren, Joy Poretzky Zweig and her husband David Zweig of Hong Kong, and Steven Poretzky and his wife Patty Woo of Encino, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Rachel and Aaron Zweig of Hong Kong, and Kaylen and Benjamin Poretzky of Encino, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
