CANTOR. Mr. Israel Cantor died Oct. 1, 2009, at home peacefully with family around him. He was 90.

Born in New York, Israel lived in the shore area for 60 years. He attended New York University, graduating with a masters in science. He worked for 35 years as a physicist for the government at Fort Monmouth. He served with the 8th Army Air Force during World War II. He was awarded The American SVC Medal; European, African, Middle Eastern SVC Medals; Good Conduct Medal; World War II Victory Medal; and The American Defense SVC Medal. He was a member of Congregation Sons of Israel. He was predeceased by his son, Howard, and his brothers, William and Nathan.

Mr. Cantor is survived by his wife, Julia; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Joe Glastein; granddaughters, Dana and Ilene; and brother, Jacob. Arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean.

FRANZMAN. Mr. Stephen "Steve" Franzman died Oct. 24, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 73.

Mr. Franzman lived in Princeton before moving to Monroe six years ago. Prior to retiring in 1994, he was a certified public accountant for more than 35 years. He served in the Army National Guard from 1954 to 1961. He was a member of Congregation B'nai Tikvah, North Brunswick, and a longtime member of Battleground-Adelphia Lodge, Knights of Pythias. A heart transplant recipient, he spoke throughout the tri-state area for The Sharing Network about organ donation and transplants.

Mr. Franzman is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sharon Miller Franzman; daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Marc Lassin of Kendall Park; sons and daughter-in-law, Craig and Elizabeth of Virginia Beach, Va., and Brian of New York City; sister, Marsha Davidson of Florida; and grandchildren, Jacob, Aaron, Tanya, Ryan, Mira and Jordan. GAINES. Mrs. Virginia Ann (nee d'Afllisio) Gaines died Oct. 27, 2009 peacefully at home surrounded by her family after fighting a brave and courageous six-year battle with lung cancer. She was 62.

Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Gaines lived in Lakewood before moving to Brick 12 years ago. Ginny, as most people knew her, graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Brooklyn and nursing school at Kings County Hospital, where she received her RN. For many years she worked as an OR Nurse at LA General Hospital, Kings County Hospital and later, part-time, at Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood. She met her husband Richard while working as an OR Nurse at the Kings County Hospital, while he was serving his residency in oral surgery. Fitness was a large part of Ginny's life. She was certified by many organizations as a personal trainer and pilates instructor and ran a successful business in Lakewood for many years. Physical fitness was very important to her. She competed in biathlons and took part in long distance bike races to raise money for various charities. She was also civic-minded. She was a longtime member of Temple Beth Am Shalom in Lakewood, and was a past president of the Solomon Schechter PTA, and was a member of the women's division of the Ocean County Jewish Federation. She loved traveling on missions to Israel. She also worked tirelessly as an active fundraiser for the March of Dimes after one of her daughters was born with congenital problems. Ginny was a devoted wife, grandmother, daughter, and sibling and took it upon herself to make sure her family was always together. She was the glue that held her family together after he parents passed away.

Mrs. Gaines is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years, Dr. Richard Gaines; children, Jennifer Dagner and her companion Dave Hartman, Ali Ganezer and her husband Dan, and Brent Gaines and his companion Esther Grazi, all of Brick; brothers, Ted d'Afflisio of Lincroft, and Joseph d'Afflisio of Manchester; sister, Alberta Aldinger of Hillsborough, Calif.; and grandchildren, Chris, Dylan, and Jana. JOSEPH. Mr. William J. Joseph died Oct. 25, 2009, at Greenwood House. He was 83.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Joseph lived in Ewing for more than 50 years. He graduated from Eastern District High School, Brooklyn College, and Columbia University. He began his career as a history teacher and then as a field representative for the Federal Social Security Administration. Transferring to the New Jersey State Service, he became the director of pensions and served in that capacity for more than 25 years. In his work he modernized the several retirement systems for public employees in N.J. providing coverage for almost all under Federal Social Security, so that the benefits of the federal program supplemented the pensions granted by the retirement plans. He directed the extension of life insurance in all systems so that it constituted a substantial increase in benefits to the survivors of public employees, especially those who died in service before retirement. His office took the lead in altering age-old record keeping to modern computer-kept accounts. He was the secretary of the State Health Benefits program, with nearly 800,000 participants as well as of the Supplemental Annunity System,whereby members could add to their pensions by systematic payroll deductions. He was an Army combat veteran wounded in Germany and received the Purple Heart. He was married for 10 years to Sydelle Friedland, who left him with four small children when she died. His wife of 36 years, Edith Finkelstein Hoffman, died in 2005. He was also predeceased by his beloved daughter, Gail Cynthia Joseph.

Mr. Josephis survived by his children, David E. of Burlington, Harlan L. of Bensalem, Pa., Saul J. of Hinghman, Mass., Dr. Kenneth Hoffman of Teaneck, and Mrs. Maxine Neuhauser of Scotch Plains; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. LEVINE. Mr. Alvin Harold Levine died Oct. 24, 2009, at the Medical Center at Princeton. He was 81.

Born in Newark, Mr. Levine lived in Newark, Livingston, Short Hills, Caldwell, and Elberon before moving to Monroe 12 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1992, he owned Al Levine Wholesale Florist, Manhattan, for 15 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Mr. Levine is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose Rothman Levine; daughters, Denise W. Levine of California, and Dawn Levine Beye of Wayne; sister and brother-in-law, Adele and Herman Urowsky of Monroe; and grandchildren, Amberly and Morgan Beye. Interment at Beth David Cemetery, Kenilworth. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

LIEBERMAN. Mr. Robert Lieberman died Oct. 24, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 77.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Lieberman lived in Marlboro before moving to Monroe in 2000. He was a salesman in the garment industry for 55 years, and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Lieberman is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elaine Bergstein Lieberman; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Karen of Short Hills; daughter and son-in-law, Lorri and Brian Kipnis of East Brunswick; sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Harold Serper of Bellmore, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. ROEY. Mr. Kalman Roey died Sept. 27, 2009, at Whiting Healthcare in Whiting. He was 91.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Roey lived in Lakewood until 1985 when he moved to Whiting. Before joining the Army he owned the first Chinese restaurant in Lakewood. He served his country with distinctive service in the Air force in World War II, achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He retired from Dover Oil Co. in 1969, which he owned and operated, and worked at Kroll Realty, Lakewood. He was a former member of Congregation Ahavat Shalom in Lakewood, and was a member of the Jewish War Veterans in Toms River, Lakewood, and Whiting, and also was active in the VIP in Whiting. He was an officer in the alumni class of 1935 of Lakewood and president of the Laurelton Pine Figure Skating Club. He had membership in the CBI. His hobbies were tennis and ping pong until he lost his vision in 1994.

Mr. Roey is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Miriam; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Nadgy of Rockville, Md.; daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta Clark of Albuquerque, N.M., Kathy Roy of Jackson, Menucha and Avrohom Gershon of Chicago, and Deborah and Roger Rumble of West Chester, Pa.; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Penny Eli of Lakewood; sister, Ethel Foster of California; 10 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. SHERY. Mrs. Hannah Shery died Oct. 24, 2009, at the Specialty Hospital at Kimball, Lakewood. She was 81.

Born in Brooklyn, Hannah moved with her family to Toms River, where she graduated as valedictorian of the Toms River High School class of 1945, and then attended New York University on a full scholarship, majoring in business. After college, she returned to Toms River where she ran the Ocean County Farmers Federal Credit Union for many years. She married Henry Shery in 1953. They co-founded Community Surgical Supply in 1962 and retired in 1980. For 20 years Hannah volunteered at the Ocean Monmouth Food Bank. The couple moved to Leisure Village West in 2001, where they made many dear friends, and were involved in many clubs and activities. Hannah's greatest joys included doing everything with Henry, sitting in her sunny office, cooking and hosting get-togethers, and especially being a part of the lives of their children and grandchildren.

Hannah is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Henry; loving children and their spouses, Dr. Jay Shery and Katie of Los Angeles, Beth Shery Sisk and Donald of Rockaway, and Dr. Steven Shery and Lori of Edison; grandchildren, Erica Shery of London, Samantha Shery of Las Vegas, Laura Haynie of San Diego, Adam Shery studying at the University of Hartford, and Zachary Shery studying at Muhlenberg College. SMITH. Mrs. Hadasa Smith died Aug. 13, 2009. She was 87.

Born in Nisko, Poland, Mrs. Smith was a Holocaust survivor. After immigrating to America in 1952 she lived in Passaic, then Brick, before moving to Youngstown five years ago. She was a member of Bikur Cholim, Temple Emanuel, Temple Beth Or and its Sisterhood in Brick, and Temple El Emeth in Youngstown, and a lifelong member of Hadassah. Her husband of 49 years, Paul, died in 1969.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her dear daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Rabbi Dr. Robert E. Fierstien, rabbi emeritus of Temple Beth Or, Brick, and Susan and Dr. Leonard Kanterman of Warren, Ohio; brother, Moshe Payt of Ramat HaSharon, Israel; sister, Esther Borchowitz of Herzliya, Israel; and grandchildren, Paul, Jill, Michael, Jeremy, and Ilana.
