BECKER. Mr. Bernard Becker died Sept. 13, 2009, at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was 79. Originally from New York City, Mr. Becker was the son of the late Jacob Becker and Betty (Leiberman) Becker. He moved to the Jersey Shore in 1995 and to Annapolis, Md., in 2005. He was an IRS revenue officer until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed living in Annapolis with its proximity to museums, restaurants and cultural activity. He was an avid music lover and model train collector. He and his wife were active members of the Jewish Club of Heritage Harbor in Annapolis. Mr. Becker is survived by his wife, Malvina Perlman Becker, of Annapolis; daughters, Robin Bickel of Randolph, Alaine Golden of South Orange, and Diane Meloche of Birmingham, Mich.; son, Stephen, of Jersey City; step-daughters, Linda Tabach of Potomac, Md., and Amy Hurd of Severna Park, Md.; sister, Lillian Williams of New York City; seven grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. Interment at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfbein and Newman of Maryland. Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1107 Kenilworth Dr., Suite 202, Baltimore, Md. 21204. CHOPIN. Mrs. Dorothy Chopin (nee Kaplan) died peacefully at home Sept. 7, 2009. She was 103. Born in Poland, Mrs. Chopin came to the United States as a child to New York City, and was raised in Hartford, Conn. She spent many years in Newark and Elizabeth, and moved to Aventura, Fla., returing to New Jersey seven years ago. She was head of the payroll department at the Newark Board of Education from 1950 to 1972. She was a very active fundraiser for The Jewish National Fund, a life member of Hadassah, a life member of the Women's League of Israel, and was feted as "Woman of the Year." She was a member of The Aventura Jewish Center in Florida, and the Sisterhood. She attended Temple B'nai Jeshurun, Short Hills and was a member of Seniors Keep in Touch. On the Sabbath before her 100th birthday, she was given the honor to address the members of Temple B'nai Jeshurun. On May 2, at her granddaughter Beth Chopin's wedding, she gave a moving testimonial to the newlyweds. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Irving Chopin. Mrs. Chopin is survived by her children, Lynn Stein and Dr. Richard M. Chopin; children-in-law, Carole Chopin and Lewis Stein; grandchildren, Kara Stein, Judy Stein-Loewenthal, Jill Stein-Collins, Beth Chopin Morgan, and Steven Tucker; grandsons-in-law, Steve Loewenthal, Jonathan Collins and Chris Morgan; and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jake and Eden. Mr. Irving Jeris died Aug. 22, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 81. Born in Newark, Mr. Jeris lived in Union before moving to Monroe 12 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1988, he owned Jeris Food Market, Roselle Park, for many years. Mr. Jeris is survived by his wife, Marilyn David Jeris; daughters and son-in-law, Vicki and Harold Horowitz of Wilmington, Del., and Nancy Hunter of Morganville; and grandchildren, Jaimee, Jeffrey, and Nicole. Interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. LEVINE. Mrs. Jean Levine died peacefully Sept. 13, 2009 at the Haven Hospice Unit at the JFK Medical Center in Edison. She was 84. Born in Bialystok, Poland, Mrs. Levine was a Holocaust survivor. She immigrated to the U.S., settling in Perth Amboy, then moved to Woodbridge, where she had lived most of her life before moving to Edison 23 years ago. She was a teller with the National State Bank in Avenel for many years, before retiring more than 20 years ago. She was a member of the Sisterhood of Congregation Adath Israel in Woodbridge for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Jewish Community Center in Edison, and the Elder Day Program sponsored by the Jewish Federation in Edison. Her husband, Charles Levine, died in 1997. Mrs. Levine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Marty Poltrock of Edison; son, Larry Levine, and his companion, Tali Marcus, of North Bergen; grandchildren, Dr. Scott Poltrock of Edison, Dr. Ellen Stein and her husband, Mitchell, of Hoboken, and Alexa and Julia Levine of Jersey City; and sister, Roza Rudnik of Rio de Janero, Brazil. Mandell died Sept. 11, 2009. He was 91. Born in Bellows Falls, Vt., Mr. Mandell lived in Plainfield for many years and then in Martinsville for the past 36 years. He was a 1936 graduate of Plainfield High School, where he received varsity letters in swimming and football. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT) and did extensive graduate work at the University of Colorado at Denver. He served in the Army as a Second Lieutenant doing intelligence work during World War II. He worked for the federal government for 33 years, most notably as the chief of structural design of the New York district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also worked as the resident construction engineer of a 39-mile segment of the Bridgewater sewer system and then did consulting work. He was a life fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineering. He was a member of Temple Beth-El, Plainfield, and its Men's Club for more than 25 years. Mr. Mandell is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marcia (nee Friedman); children, Erica and Barry; sister, Ruth Treffinger; 17 adoring nieces and nephews; 28 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and many good friends. Mr. Raymond Schulman died Sept. 8, 2009, at home. He was 84. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Schulman lived in Staten Island before moving to Monroe 17 years ago. He retired in 1986 as a social worker for Manhattan, where he worked for 36 years. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Schulman is survived by he wife of 59 years, Corinne Fink Schulman; daughter, Susan of Philadelphia; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Kelly of Chico, Calif.; brothers and sister-in-law, Marvin and Bea of Broomall, Pa., and Bernard of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Jessie Rose Schulman and Brandon Bush. Hospice, 176 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, N.J. 07701. SCHULMAN. Mrs. Gloria Schulman died Sept. 9, 2009. She was 80. After growing up in Brooklyn, Mrs. Schulman raised her family with her husband, David, in Oceanside, Long Island. She spent her remaining years in Englishtown where she enjoyed spending time with family and playing mah jongg. As the nucleus of the family, there was always love, laughter, and plenty of food in her home. Devoted to the needs of her children and grandchildren, she embodied the true meaning of unconditional love. Her home was a revolving door for family, friends, and last minute guests. Despite the time and effort it involved, she would cook different dishes to appease the diverse appetites of her children and their friends. She kept up with the fashion trends and insisted on having her hair and nails done. While she was able, no shopping spree was too much, but everything she bought was for someone else. Her loving memory will be kept alive by her children. She was predeceased by her husband, David. Mrs. Schulman is survived by her sons, Steven, Stuart, and Brian; daughter, Donna Warar; grandchildren, Jaclyn, Melissa, Michael, Jessica, David; son -in-law, Neil Warar; and daughters-in-law, Lillian, Barbara and Barbara Schulman. Mrs. Dorothy Tankel died, Sept. 7, 2009 in the Overlook Hospital, Summit. She was 87. Born in Newark, Mrs. Tankel moved to Clark in 1956. A member of the Kriegman Family Association, she was a former member of Temple Beth Or in Clark. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph. Mrs. Tankel is survived by her children, Sheila Weinreb, Marc Tankel, and Janice Campbell; brother, Melvin Krieger; grandchildren, Joshua, Karly, Philip, and Jessica; and several nieces and nephews.
