ARBEITMAN. Mrs. Mollie Arbeitman died Sept. 18, 2008 at home. Mollie was raised in Mountaindale, N.Y. and New York City. She lived in Brooklyn for 30 years, then moved to Warren, and finally to Monroe. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a remarkable person, with great integrity, intelligence, generosity, and thoughtfulness. Mollie was an outstanding artist, winning many awards, a classical pianist, avid reader, master gardener, world traveler, New York City schoolteacher at Ditmas JHS in Brooklyn, and friend to many. She had her master's degree and had begun a Ph.D. at Columbia. She had a zest for life and there were not enough hours in the day for her to do all she wanted. She volunteered to teach English in Israel and also Monroe. Her husband, Lawrence, died in 1987. Mrs. Arbeitman is survived by her daughter, Joan Alpert, of Pomona, N.Y.; son, Charles Arman of Cherry Hill; and grandchildren, Lisa and Stewart Alpert of Los Angeles, Calif. She will always live in their hearts. Interment at Beth El Cemetery, DIENER. Mrs. Frances Diener died Sept 21, 2008, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 90. Born and raised in Perth Amboy where her family owned the Parnes Bakery, Frances lived in North Brunswick, Edison and, for the past 27 years, in Manalapan. She was an excellent baker and cook and also catered for several years. She retired from the Middlesex County Board of Social Services in 1987 as a fraud investigator for welfare and food stamps. Mrs. Diener is survived by her loving husband, Conrad, of 67 years; sons and daughter-in-law, Edward of Winston, Ga., and Michael and Lisa of Highland Park; foster daughter, Beruda Dietrick of DeKalb, Ill.; sister, Estelle Boara of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and grandsons, Miles and Jesse. Interment at FIVUSH. Mrs. Gloria Fivush died Sept. 17, 2008, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 81. Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Fivush lived in Elmont, N.Y., before moving to Monroe 18 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1988, she was a manager for the State of New York Department of Labor, Mrs. Fivush is survived by her husband of 61 years, Milton; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri and Steven Ross of San Antonio, Barbara Fivush and David Berliner of Owings Mills, Md., and Mindy and Benjamin Levine of Dallas; and grandchildren, Andrew, Allison, Alan, Amanda, Daniel, Josh, Ariel and Eryn. Interment at GLASSTON. Mrs. Gertrude Goldie Glasston died Sept. 12, 2008, at home. She was 97. Born in Hoboken, Goldie lived in Elizabeth before moving to Linden in 1949. She was an executive secretary with the Linden board of education, retiring in 1961. She was a member of the Sisterhood of Congregation Anshe Chesed, where she was Woman of the Year in 1998, and a founding member and first president of the Hilda Gould Chapter of Deborah. She was predeceased by her husband, Matthew; son, Stanley; daughter, Marilyn Zitome;, and granddaughter, Ellen Sue Zitomer Brown. Mrs. Glasston is survived by her grandchildren and their spouses, Mindy and Kenneth Freelund, Roy and Elyse Zitomer, and Robert Brown; and great-grandchildren, Matthew and Hallie Brown, Max and Sam Zitomer and Jake and Emily Freelund. Interment at LEVINSON. Mrs. Frances Levinson died Sept. 16, 2008, at Care One at Jackson. She was 92. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mrs. Levinson settled in Lakewood in 1947. A caring and involved woman, she was a member of Temple Beth Am for many years and was a founding member of its Sisterhood. She founded the Planned Parenthood in Lakewood more than 40 years ago, was president of the Switlick PTA in the 1950s, and was an active and beloved grandmother. Her husband, David, died in 1967. Mrs. Levinson is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Gale of Lakewood, Alan and Jackie of Belleville, and Ricky and Robin Lipetz of Huntington Valley, Pa.; grandchildren, Deborah, David, Althea, Justin and Brett; and three great-grandchildren. Interment at LEWIS. Mrs. Charlotte Lewis died Sept. 8, 2008, at Morristown Memorial Medical Center. She was 87. Born in Newark, Mrs. Lewis lived in West Orange for 27 years before moving to Manchester 21 years ago. She was a member of Hadassah and ORT. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert. Mrs. Lewis is survived by her son, Charles; daughter, Robin; sister, Florence Fessler Schwartz; sister-in-law, Dora Lewis Kalender; and grandchildren, Jessica and Andrew Goldberg and Dylan and Cody Lewis. Interment at Mutterperl. Mr. Sidney Mutterperl died Sept. 21, 2008, at the New Jersey Veterans Home, Edison. Mr. Mutterperl was raised in Bayonne and lived in Morristown for 40 years before moving to Monroe in 1992. Prior to retiring in 1988, he was an executive with Maidenform Inc. for 49 years. He was a decorated World War II Army veteran, having attained the rank of captain. He was a member of the Morristown B'nai B'rith. He was predeceased by two brothers, Morris and Nathan Mutterperl. Mr. Mutterperl is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Zacharow Mutterperl; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Hannah of Parsippany; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Garrett Wyckoff of Great Meadows and Mindy and Mitchell Mutterperl-Ardman of Solebury, Pa.; sister, Janet Perkes of Hamden, Conn.; and grandchildren, Rachel and Aaron Mutterperl, Lauren and Brett Wyckoff and Jared Ardman. Superior Court Judge Florence Ring Peskoe died Sept. 4, 2008, in Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was 78. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Judge Peskoe was born in Newark, and grew up in Irvington. She and her late husband, Lloyd, lived in Roselle and Tinton Falls for 16 years, and Colts Neck for 30 years before moving to Shrewsbury five years ago. She was a retired New Jersey Superior Court judge. A proud honors graduate of Wellesley College and Rutgers Law School, she served the State of New Jersey in several court-related administrative positions, including service and The Clerk of the New Jersey Supreme Court, and culminating in her appointment as deputy director of the Administrative Office of the Courts. In 1980, she was first appointed to the Superior Court bench by Gov. Brendan Byrne and was later reappointed with tenure. Judge Peskoe was active in many local charitable causes and Democratic political organizations prior to her judicial appointment. She chaired a number of committees of the national American Bar Association, prior to her appointment and later as a judge. She was a nationally recognized expert in court administration and judicial ethics. Florence Peskoe will be remembered as a trailblazer for women entering law school and in the judiciary. She was a staunch advocate for civil rights and women's rights, and a community leader throughout her life. Her beloved husband of 56 years, Lloyd, died in February 2007. Judge Peskoe is survived by her loving sons and daughters-in-law, Stuart Peskoe and Barbara Wolfinger of North Andover, Mass., and Andrew and Julie Peskoe of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.; devoted daughter, Nina Peskoe Peyser and Nina's partner, Michael Rubenstein, of South Orange; and her cherished grandchildren, Benjamin, Sarah, Madeline, Jacob and Anna. Mr. Alan Plans died Sept. 8, 2008, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 69. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Plans lived in New York City until moving to Monroe in 1970. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science in 1963, and had a 40-plus year career in textile sales, the last 15 years as president of Liba Textiles, Inc., New York, retiring in 2007. He served in the Army artillery from 1965 to 1968, and was an auxiliary police officer with the Central Park Police. He was active in service to his synagogue, Temple B'nai Shalom in Mr. Plans is survived by his wife of 38 years, Norma C. (Blumberg); son and daughter-in-law Jason and Lori of West Chester, Pa.; granddaughter, Rachel Weiss and her husband, Jonathan, of West Chester, Pa.; mother-in-law, Irene Blumberg of Rossmoor; brother and sister-in-law, Barry and Regina of Coco Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Jacob Weiss and Jordan Plans; and many nieces and nephews. Interment at SCHIFF. Mr. Morris Schiff died Sept. 14, 2008, at home. He was 91. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Schiff lived in Roselle before moving to Monroe 15 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1986, he was a typesetter and proofreader for the Elizabeth Daily Journal, where he worked for 27 years. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served as a technical sergeant in the 914th Signal Corps. He was a member of the Jewish Congregation of Clearbrook, Monroe, as well as Temple Mekor Chayim, Suburban Jewish Center in Linden. He served on the board of directors of B'nai B'rith, Linden. His first wife, Esther, died in 1981. Mr. Schiff is survived by his wife, Carolyn Goldstone Schiff; son and daughter-in-law, David and Devora of Highland Park; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jay Rosenberg of Old Tappan, and Carol and William Hakala of Cadillac, Mich.; step-son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Heidi Goldstone of Sante Fe, N.M.; brother, Louis of Brooklyn; and seven grandchildren. Interment at SIMON. Mrs. Roslyn Mendel Simon died Sept. 13, 2008, at home. She was 85. Born in Newark, Mrs. Simon lived in Union for 31 years before moving to Monroe nine years ago. She was a member of the Jewish Congregation of Concordia, Monroe. Her son, Howard, died in 1993. Mrs. Simon is survived by her husband, William; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Marc Zweig of Livingston; and granddaughters, Amanda and Erin. Interment at Steinberg. Mrs. Mildred Steinberg died Aug. 30, 2008. She was 95. Born in New York City, Mildred lived in Brooklyn before settling in Leisure Village West, Manchester, in 1976. She was a member of Congregation Ahavat Shalom, Lakewood, and president of the Hadassah chapters both in Brooklyn and in Manchester. Five years ago, she moved to Cleveland to be closer to her family. Her beloved husband, Harry, died in 1995; her son, Gerald, died in 1954. Mildred is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Harold Sternberg of Cleveland; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Beatrice Weissler of Brooklyn; sister, Ruth Ben Ezra of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; grandchildren, Ruth, Matthew, and David; and six great-grandchildren. Interment at UMAN. Mr. Aaron Uman died Sept. 19, 2008 at the Haven Hospice JFK Medical Center, Edison. He was 83. Born in Roselle, Mr. Uman grew up in Lakewood and lived in Linden before moving to Edison 48 years ago. He was employed as an inspector with the General Motors Corporation, Linden plant, for more than 35 years before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the company's 35-Year Club and received the commendation award for meritorious service. During his youth he worked as a cabana boy for the Lakeside Country Club in Lakewood. He lived solely for his family, treasuring the time that he could spend with his wife and daughters, teaching them his values that have been passed on to his devoted grandchildren. He spent many hours teaching his daughters to ice skate, roller skate, ski and swim and even helped out as a counselor for the Brownie troop that his daughters belonged to. He was a very active member of Temple Beth El/Edison Jewish Community Center. As the ‘Gabai' of the temple he oversaw much of the daily operations of the shul. He was a member of the Men's Club for more than 40 years and was also the co-founder of the temple's Boy Scout Troop 122. Along with his wife, he was a member of the temple's Couples Bowling League. He was also a member of the Edison Senior Citizens. He was predeceased by his brothers, Nathan and Bernard. |
