A single person's New Year's resolutions

By Gail Simons
Special to The Jewish State

As January approached, I thought about what I would resolve to do in the coming year, but I never did get around to making a list of resolutions. I decided that the Jewish New Year gave me a second opportunity to have a start fresh.

So here are some of my resolutions I jotted down for my personal and dating life that I hope will have a positive impact on my future. Who knows, they might help you, too.

      1) I shall exercise at least twice a week. Heck, what would a resolution list without resolving to get off the couch?

      2) I shall improve my food choices, even if it kills me not to have that bowl of sugared cereal or those spoonfuls of peanut butter for dinner.

      3) I promise not to talk about my ex-boyfriends to my new squeeze. Trust me, he doesn't care any more about who I went out with before him than I want to hear about his exes.

      4) This one is especially important. If I were putting my resolutions in order this would be No. 1. If I'm not interested in a guy, I will allow myself to say "no" instead of going on a date with him when I'd rather be home chipping paint off the wall. I resolve to no longer punish myself.

      5) I will get involved in worthwhile activities. Perhaps something that will benefit others. This could evolve into something very gratifying and who knows, I could meet that "someone."

      6) A little religion doesn't hurt anyone. Maybe I'll start going to Friday night services on a regular basis with or without friends. This could be another opportunity to accomplish more than one thing and painlessly, too.

      7) I promise myself not to stare at the phone and wonder why the new guy I went out with hasn't called back for a second date.

      8) I will try to learn more about football so that I can appreciate the game and be able to actually be interested instead of faking it.

      9) Maybe I'll take a cooking class to improve my cooking skills so that when I do meet someone special I can make him a fabulous dinner.

      10) And, lastly, I promise to finally join one of the online, Jewish dating sites for more than just one month. And, actually use it to contact guys instead of just browsing and then complaining that it's a waste of time and money.

Now that you have read my list, I'd like to know if any of you have made some Jewish New Year's resolutions of your own. If you have, I'd be interested in knowing what they are.

Wishing all of you a l'shanah tovah. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
